Wrecked My Volvo 200

These have been the worst 3 days I've had in a long time. Friday, I was on the way to the County Courthouse to pay my taxes when I was involved in an accident with another car about 1 block from my destination. My '84 wagon took the brunt of the damage, after hitting or being hit by a Dodge Charger.
Not only is my car undriveable, but I was charged with a moving violation and points against my license, the first in 45 years of driving.

I trust my Brickboard friends to tell me what to expect from the insurance company and salvage yard appraisal people. I filed the claim today and have to go to the towing service yard to get the rest of the stuff out of my beloved Volvo, before it's taken to an appraisal yard (Copart?).

I hope this situation has a bright side, but it's hard to see it right now.

Thanks, guys, for listening,

Andrew

Andrew -- my condolences on the loss of of your Volvo and the tough luck you are having. Are you not sure how the accident happened? Did you have the 245 insured for collision? - or are you dealing with the other car's insurer?
In any case-if a settlement is due you - you will probably have to fight them some to get anything close to what you think you deserve. I've been through this a few times. Gather up whatever recent service or repair bills. Collect ads (local and otherwise) for similar cars and pay attention to what the insurer presents as evidence of value. In one case the other's insurer listed three ads to show my car was not worth anything. I countered--the 3 ads they cited from 3 publications were all for the same car in poor condition. I got them to revise their offer - more money for the car itself - money for towing/storage - and money to cover the sales tax on a replacement vehicle. Original offer went from less than $1,000 (beautiful '92 940 Turbo) to $2,300 - and I got to keep the car (then sold $1300 worth of parts - interior, engine , trans, wheels/tires and other bits). I am not familiar with the "appraisal" yard you mentioned. Does that have to do with whatever state you are in?
Deal with them as though you know you have rights and don't agree with any first offer. best of luck to you -- Dave

Thanks, Peter. I have to be in court tomorrow morning. I was given a ticket by the city policeman and points for failing to yield right of way. I'm hoping to get charges dismissed tomorrow.
I settled with my insurance company last week. I didn't try to buy my beloved Volvo back from them. It would have meant having to pay to have the car towed back home, about 90 miles. I bought that car new in 1984, kept the oil changed regularly, and other maintenance myself when I was able. I'm no longer able to keep it up, so then the accident and now this. It is like losing a member of my family. Hell, that car has been more reliable than a lot of my family.
Yesterday was my last day to drive. I'm hanging up the keys, so to speak. Life goes on...

          I still love Volvos!

          Andrew
