940 Rear Shock Absorber - Rubber Washer 900 1997

Hi all,

Today I was replacing my rear shocks, the rear right one was easy, the rear left has been a big pain so far.
To make it short, I had to cut it with a grinder to remove it.
As a result, I had to cut both lower anti-vibration rubber washers.

The new shocks I purchased are the Sachs Advantage 106491 (Volvo P/N 1329500) and they were supplied without new rubber washers.

I launched VIDA and searched for those washers, no trace of them, which means they are not supplied.

I am stuck as it looks impossible to find those washers anywhere, I have spent the last two hours on the internet, there is nothing even close that I can use to replace them.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

    940 Rear Shock Absorber - Rubber Washer 900 1997

    Dear Metallo,

Hope you're well. The photo is helpful as are the dimensions. As I do not own / have not owned any 960 or S/V90 car, I'm not familiar with the rear suspension on these cars. Does the lower shock mounting bolt pass through these washers, and so separate the shock bolt steel tube's ends from each of the metal "ears", welded to the frame? Thus, are these washers "sandwiched" between the ends of the shock mounting and the mounting ears?

If so, it should be possible to find a rubber hose, with the correct internal diameter - likely the most critical dimension - and to cut a cross-section (slice) of the same width as the factory-installed washer. An example: Volvo heater hoses, if I recall correctly, are 5/8" in internal diameter and pretty close to one inch in external diameter.

Or, does the shock's lower mounting end with a threaded rod with a nut above and below a mounting plate? Do these rubber washers separate the upper and lower nuts from the steel mounting plate? If so, then the rubber washer is load-bearing and must be of the specific composition needed to bear the weight. A washer of the dimensions cited likely would not have the load-bearing capacity require, unless made of a very stiff rubber.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

      Hi Spook,

      Thank you for your insight.

Actually, I think this picture shows exactly the shock I am using:

The same absorber manufactured by Bilstein, sells with the rubber washer included, they are the only ones who include the 4 of them:

Hope this clarifies, I will check the heater hose and see if the dimension fit.

      Thank you!
      Alex

        Dear Metallo,

Hope you're well. Thank you for the photos. I presume the rubber grommets fit on the shiny sections of the shock absorber mounting ears. If so, I doubt they're 100% needful. If the shock bolts are properly torqued, the shock should not move side-to-side by even the slightest amount.

Even so, if you find rubber hose of the correct internal diameter, it should work fine to replace these grommets, if hose slices are cut as wide as the shiny section of the shock's mounting ear. The thickness (outer diameter) of the hose isn't critical, so long as there's room to insert the grommet.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook

          Thank you Spook,

I will take a peek at the heater hose and we if I can match something.

            Hi,
I replaced my rear shocks this weekend and had to cut the lower bolts as you did. The rubber washers were on the old Sachs, but not on the new Sachs. They were installed without the washers and I see no adverse effects or noises.
