I need this board's advice:
I recently purchased an early cruise kit for my 242 GT as it was missing the option and I drive it a lot on long drives sadly it was only to find out that it was not compatible with the R-sport cluster that is in the car..... I know right?....
I am obviously not reverting to the original cluster so I will probably sell it or trade it for something more useful to me
I am trying to figure out if it s indeed for the years I was told it were namely up to 1980, and complete
I also would like to get an idea of its value, I have seen kits on eBay for very good money, albeit mine is not OEM MIB etc

Let me know what you think and if there are specific parts I should make sure are in the kit
Of course if you know how to adapt it to the R-Sport cluster I will gladly hear it

I’ve used a Rostra universal cruise kit on a variety of cars over the decades. Cable pull on my 242 when it was 5.0L powered, and now DBW with LS power. All digital, adjustable, no vacuum, work flawlessly. You can even operate with the stock Volvo cruise switch/turn signal if you like. you have the 81-up kit. if you have to use the gt cluster, you need the 80-down kit and then adapt the throttle cable for the turbo intake-there were no turbos until 81. there's 2 80 kits, 4 and v6. the important part looks like this-

speedo cable from the trans goes on 1 end, another cable goes from the other to the speedo. there's a few other parts needed, specific to whatever brand car. the 81-up cars use a different speedo and there's a speed sensor in the 81 kits that is used on those. the 80 down kits use the above transducer style for the speed sensor. and combining parts kits from both won't do your job.

this is a universal kit like the 81-up kit. instead of the speedo, you glue magnets to the driveshaft, install a pickup next to it and that's the speed sensor. look at all the pictures. all i got. good luck, chuck.

I got the kit (by Dana...but Sears branded) shown in Chuck's photo not long after buying my 83. Probably in 84. It still works OK, 30-plus years later. If that kit shown is complete, then at that price I'd jump on it.

So if I understand this correctly what I got is an 81 and later kit with an early cluster

So as it is it is useless as I miss the pickup for the 81+ ?

you have to use the 81-up cluster to use the kit you have. that's why i posted the ebay kit with magnets. good luck, chuck.

I also have an 89 that could use a cruise control, it's not prewired like the newer cars so I was wondering:

Could I use my 81+ kit ? Or it would not work since the signal to the speedo is electronic rather than mechanical like the 81-85 cars
