Turn Indicators / headlight bright/dim switch inoperative 200 1987

Light bulbs checked along with emergency flashers-all functional. Relay sounds like it works-clicking sound. Fuses good. Is switch bad and repairable? New ones are not cheap. Thanks.

Hi,

Which relay of the two relays are you talking about clicking?
There is the high beam dipper relay out on the left fender and then there is a flasher or turn signal relay inside?

A four way emergency flasher checks all the brightest bulbs. Front turn yellows and the rear reds which would be the brake lights or yellow oneson some cars that flash emergency rear yellow lights or directional signals.
This tells you the filaments of those bulbs are good and the circuit wiring from the emergency flasher are good.

The turn signal stalk switch, on the left side of a right hand drive steering wheel, can be repaired by opening up the box that contains rivets that will have to replaced or some other means to fasten it back together. Maybe, through screws and nuts.
Cleaning it might help since dust, dirt or even cigarette ash is inside to screw things up. Unless it does not cancel its own signal and other signs are going on.

It maybe be better to get one from a junkyard for about six to eight dollars with a thirty day exchange warranty.
I look for the older units SMK or E (?) stamped into the back as they tend to be made better for repairing but may have more wear. They ended around the eighties.

It is a simple thing to remove once you get under the plastic covers as it’s held with only two screws and the rest unplugs. Take a picture for colors before removing wires or good notes!
Note:
A cruise control switch is the same except for an extra plug you will not use.
These switches may be the same price or a couple dollars more.

When it come to older cars you will need to get friendly with parts cars wherever you can find them.
Many JY’s will have pullers and ship out what you want, if you are marooned in desperate land! (:-)

Buying factory or on a dealers price line is sort of insane!
If the one you are replacing lasted this long and having a new one that last as long again is questionable.

In all likelihood, your car is not going to last that much longer to get all the investment back, unless you drive around your town like you are in a maze.
(-:) I’m slowly getting old enough for that.
So yes, I see your point of what is expensive and it being along the same thoughts for many who shop JYards.

By the way the crushers are winning! There is no sympathy for the Swede metal cars!
I went back on the last day of a recent “holiday savings” pulling event to get a decent 1984 wagon Tan Vinyl passenger seat for $15. I got immediately sad, the whole car was gone!

I got several other seats for $15 and $25 but I ran out of time to pick and room in my wagon for any more seats.
Well, room was tight but had room for one more! Dag-nab-it!

Hi Art,

I have to say they were just too cheap and in good enough condition to get more wear out of them.
I'm waiting for the need to use them and I have the room to store them.
They are just like so many other parts, but a little bigger. (:-)

The photo above is nice! The switch I was recommending, that he might find, has some letters casted or molded on one side or the other. Volvo used different vendors and I think they were made with better quality internals.

He can drill new holes for rivets or put in threads in the holes for machine screws on one like this.

Ahh, that's the key. I've a collection already half broken down taking up 16 feet of shelving my better half would prefer to put to her own uses. I was wondering what parts of them you intended to keep.

Though I distinctly remember grinding these "rivets" off and carefully centering holes where they were for 4-40 hardware on another switch, this repair was completed with a nylon tie. Those with the cruise feature are indeed not cheap.

Hi Art,

I think we got abandoned by the PO.
We may never know if he got out his wallet or the tool box to fix the stalk switch.

As far as the seats they are like a set of doors I have. I leave them in one piece until I need something.
I have no plans except to keep my several cars running away from the junkyards!

I’m not collecting to be a supplier like some business.
I try to keep maintenance items and the stuff I get so cheap today that I will not be able to get for sure later on.
Lots of things are interchangeable or I won’t have them. Any K-jet parts only fit my one car and it was very limited because there were never very cheap. I think Volvo only produced 10k of the GT’s in ‘78.

During my collecting I have found out that if I cannot buy the whole car, which in many ways is a lot cheaper, it is best to buy the biggest piece you can from junkyards on their half off days!
This way I do NOT get piece mealed at the front gate. They list it as one part they have to sell it that way.
I have seen people get a window regulator without glass for $15. Not good when you buy the whole door complete for $45. Then if, it’s my kind of day, in being a half off day. It’s all for $25.

It doesn’t make sense to pack it away parts unless the storage is free.
I might be sick with a disease but is not diagnosed, as of yet! Crazy is normal!

It’s sick to let transportation vehicles, that have “a logical and sensibility for routine maintenance costs” built in to simply go away. They have stood quite a test of time.
All of it getting crushed for what some good tires are worth.
It’s lumped into a world of plastic and foam. The age of the “throw away” cars. Lots of those cars made never saw the light of a “no-lien title” during its short lifetime.

If I keep a car decently nice, that comes with spare stuff, it may keep them alive longer for a person that hopefully suffers some of the saneness disease I have!

For the six cars and stuff I have, I have an investment of one mid range sedan at today’s car prices.
Each one of those can fix the other one with its parts. Try that with any car made in the last ten years! The tenth car can make the first one near new again. Not likely with two year revamps or five year new sheets of paper designs.

The “heads up” on these cars is, it will never just go “obsolete” when the display goes blank for the lack of a code update and a support compatibility issue. Simple is as simple does.

This just had this happen with a weatherstation I have. It communicates via the internet from my houses to me.
I have to buy a new upgraded version now, at a reduced price of course! Still twice their cost!
They decided to no longer support my optional, two year old to me, device.
They want to align themselves with the Alexia or those Google talk-to internet devices.

My generic information probably turns into part of someone’s area information Weather Service. The whole package gets lumped into a monthly fee on other device networks.
If I ever get asked for a fee, I’ll know what else gets obsolete.

The PO is a troll. I don't know how he gets his jollies picking on the brickboard, but he is all over the place.

As far as you and Art, thank you both for the wisdom you impart on a daily basis.

I also learned to pull the entire part at a JY. I wanted just the seat skins from an 850, same cost as the entire seat - $20. Now I have motors, cables, plastic parts, switches, for the 'just in case'.

I beg to differ on our malady, it is not a sickness to be frugal. It is not a sickness to want things that are simple to repair. It is not a sickness to drive a 20-30 year old car that brings a smile to my face every time I drive it.

On behalf of Art and I ... I will say your words of kindness are helpful to us! Good comments help keep the board working for all of us.

I cannot say much about being a troll. I never met one!
In the Cherry land of Michigan, there is the Mackinac Bridge in the North that spans a strait between the North and South Peninsulas.
You are a Troll, if you live below a bridge and you are a fudgie, if you live above the bridge.
I was smacking fudge when I learned of the folk lore from the locals.

I read where Swedish Baklava just licensed a car in Florida and they gave him historical plates!
I think it's wonderful because our Volvos have been in so many movies they need the recognition.
Just like a little pat on the back is good!
I've seen several famous actors sitting in them and doing their dialogue. Nice head rests.
I see them flash by or just sitting in a background of streets quietly enhancing the time frame for the directors!

It sparks me into a smile too!

Perhaps. Many threads on this board go just like that, but there are just as many reasons for it. If one reason stands above others, more common than the rest, it has nothing to do with etiquette, but just the fact those of us who drive our 240's every day have learned all about them by now, leaving only those who have a 240 as a spare car with no urgency to repair. It can take folks six months to get past something you or I might feel needs doing this afternoon.

Not at all, though what I asked you answered last go 'round. You have the space. I don't, I have only one house, so I tend to view the rest of the world as if it were built like my own. Parochialism. It is interesting to learn how others live.

Funny, I remember the day, very early in my yarding experience, that I learned that lesson. Picked, pulled, and left at the gate. No chance I was gonna reinstall!

Absolutely correct. Consumer independence is an obsolete idea. Any business model today not using the HP invention (big money in ink) has no future. Subscription model. Monthly bills. Rent. Termination fees.
