Changed timing belt, now engine sputters, stalls and smokes: blown valves/pistons? 200 1987

I changed out the timing belt and front seals. At first the timing was way off so it backfired and didn't start. The distributor turned out to be about 180 degrees off at TDC, so I pulled it and reinstalled it to point to the wire for plug 1 at TDC. Bingo.

Now it starts, but it has a loud, rattly sputter, dies quickly, and the smoke of something burning comes from the hole in the prehistoric exhaust pipe right under the engine.

Partway through the process I came across the advice to not rotate the crankshaft by itself during the timing belt procedure because it risks running the pistons and valves afoul of one another. Too late. So, non-interference or not, does this sound like I may have blown valves and/or pistons?

If so, is there anything else I should do to diagnose? Thanks.

From the "all's well that ends well" department: everything's back together, "new" jy HB that doesn't spin freely by hand, new timing belt, new seals, new water pump, "new" jy timing covers, new accessory bushings, new belts, timed with the light, and purring like a kitten. Better than before.

Thanks again for all the helpful guidance.

" The distributor turned out to be about 180 degrees off at TDC, so I pulled it and reinstalled it to point to the wire for plug 1 at TDC. Bingo.""

As noted in the other Post Start Over.

Bingo? NOT, buy re-installing the Dist when it was 180 off you just set the #1 to fire when the rest of the timing is set to fire on ----which ever Wire in the Distrib is 180 from #1.

If the timing was 180 off it means that when you put the timing belt on the Distrib crank shaft was not in the TDC position

WORST CASE: Go ALL the Way Back to reinstalling the Intermed shaft toothed wheel.
(Didn't you have a post about++++Any tips on freeing the intermediate shaft bolt for a seal replacement?)

Well when you replaced that you MOST probably did not align the Mark on the toothed wheel at TDC --- OR you did for but the rest of the engine was not at TDC WHEN YOU BOLTED THAT in the shaft. That Intermed shaft Mark and the Mark on the back of the Timing Belt Cover---to which it is set is hard to see. Some here use a Mirror, unless you have removed the radiator to do the job and can get undere there and look straight at it. All 3 muct be aligned.

You may have to pull the intermed wheel off and re-set it.

It sounds like when you originally set it to TDC you weren't on the compression stroke. Like others, start over. You didn't damage anything moving the crank. Hell doing 80mph and broken timing belt. Pretty sure everything was still moving around and no damage.

    no real damage done.
you have to go back to square one and set the timing harmonic balancer at TDC.

then peak at the camshaft sprocket and see how many teeth its off. and ensure you rotor under the diz cap is pointing to #1.

get that sorted out and you ought to be good progressing from kindofhandy to actuallyhandy...:)

Awesome. Thank you. It turned out when I reoriented the distributor it looked right but it was one gear tooth off.

It's all back together but the splash pan and it's running. Still a little loud. The smoke, I think, was burnoff from the coolant I didn't catch that ended up on the exhaust downpipe. When it heated up it steamed off. That's my theory so far.

Next step test drive. Probably need to figure out how to use my old school timing light or get one that can sense through the plug wire so I can find and fine tune the distributor position.

As always, I appreciate everyone's help.
