Trusty 240 Will Not Start / Troubleshooting Guidance? 200 1985

Hi, All -

Our trusty 240 with over 330K has stopped starting. I'm getting no firing or sputtering, just starter spinning, Prior to dying completely, it was running rough, and required blipping the throttle to keep her going. Car has historically been meticulously maintained by professional independent Volvo shops in Portland, Oregon and by me following Bentley guide. I've checked the fuse near the power steering reservoir, but need a structured way of troubleshooting the problem. Any advice on obvious things to check to get this old girl going again?

Many thanks!

Aaron

That year had a lot of problems with deteriorating wires. May be a problem in the main harness or perhaps near the junction in the middle of the fire wall

    Hi,

Boy, that sounds mighty dead to me.

The timing belt may have broken.
Do you have any records on when the last time it was replaced?

    This is your first step!
Remove the oil fill cap from the top of the engine and have a look inside.
You will see a shaft with some big lumps on it. This is you valve opening cam shaft.

Next have someone crank the engine while you are looking for it to rotate.
If you see nothing happening then your timing belt is broken!

Get back to us and someone will walk you through more diagnostic steps.

Whoops, just saw your post Art!
Your the man with those pictures again! (:-)

    Here's how I would begin.

    1) Make sure the cam is turning. Look in the oil filler hole while cranking.
    2) Be sure that fuse and the relay works. You can't see its goodness, but you can test the results by finding battery voltage on the orange wire at the AMM with the key on in KP-II.
    3) Check for spark by spritzing a bit of flammable liquid into the intake manifold.
