High Beam and O/D Indicator Light Dimmer 1800 1973

OK, here's a couple questions. There's a small switch under the dash, by the driver's vent control, that dims the O/D and high beam indicator lights by means of a couple internal resistors - separate resistors for each of the indicators. The back of the switch says one terminal is 39 ohms and the other is 100 ohms. So which indicator is wired to which terminal?

Also was there a standard for whether you throw the switch UP or DOWN for dimming? (I know, I need to get a life.)

Also is there a standard location to mount the flasher unit. Mine is hanging from the harness right now and it looks like it might mount on the back of the speedo or tach by one of the thumb nuts. The flare has a small hole for mounting, it's not one of barbed clip-on things.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the Info! 1800 1973

    Kitty / Eric / Ron / Tom.

Thanks everyone! Your 1800 knowledge has been invaluable through this project. Especially when I tear something like the dash apart one year and try to put it all back together a year later.

A couple years ago I took the sharpest copy of the '73 wiring diagram I could find and divided it up in Photoshop into ten separate 8-1/2 x 11 images, printed them out, and spliced them all together. I now have a poster-sized diagram hanging on the garage wall. It has been both life saving and educational. But I've worn a path walking back and forth between car and wiring diagram! The PO had taken some less-than-desirable wiring freedoms under the dash and with the ignition so I'm getting it all back to original.

The problem is that the wiring diagram showed the dimmer switch OK, but it didn't specify which light was wired to which pole on the switch. I considered Eric's theory about the bulb wattage but I didn't know those values for sure. The diagram says 1.2 W for the O/D light and it gives NO value for the high beam light. Fortunately the switch is quite accessible so I can swap the wires later if I have to after I power it all up (and watch for smoke :)

Oh, and if any of you possesses one go those indicator light dimmer switches in good shape, hang onto it as it's worth more than a bitcoin!! I got two of them from a guy over in Sweden and they both had cracks that propagate outward from the pivot pin holes. Eventually the whole threaded part cracks in half. I had to devise a reinforcement that I'm not to proud of but it works. Lesson learned - don't even try to flip the switch without the securing ring screwed on as it will help the switch resist cracking.

Tom, I looked in the owners manual for the UP/DOWN orientation and somehow completely missed it. I was looking for a "32" in the function descriptions. Thanks for pointing me to it!

I'm still looking for an affordable wiper switch (rocker type). After bashing the PO over his wiring shortcuts I'm considering my own mod to incorporate a wiper delay. I did this on a 144 we had years ago, using a $10 JC Whitney delay along with the OE switch. Living in Georgia, it was a really nice mod as they get a lot of light misty sprinkles there. It appears that an early 80's Ford pickup and Bronco have the same wiper motor wiring so I may search the JY's for one of their switch/delay setups.

Finally, if nobody argues otherwise, I'll mount the flasher unit to any accessible mounting point like the speedo to tack thumb nut.

    Thanks again, guys. Gotta run.

Thanks for the Info! 1800 1973

FYI, I believe I can still get new high beam/overdrive light dimmer switches for $14.00.

And the flasher relay is supposed to held to underside of the dash with a screw near the steering column like the odometer reset cable and may actually use the same screw as the reset cable.

Thanks for the Info! 1800 1973

      Chris;

Having a big wiring diagram, next to a maybe poster of Irv and his 1800 and also the '73 Bunny with hers make for great (and suitable) vintage Volvo garage porn...

Even if you hooked up those wires directly to chassis, there wont be any smoke!...both are 12V bulbs so full voltage wouldn't hurt them or anything else...the resistors are to drop some voltage and the brightness as a result...I do believe knowing the lamp wattages and the resistance is enough info to calculate back to which R would go with which lamp, but simply trying it both ways to see which one works better is easy, with low risk, and spares someone the mathematical gyrations...

Check with Don Tibault(sp) on Cape Cod (P1800.com?) for a used rocker switch.

Be very careful when installing an Int Wiper Control...the simple closing contact of the $10 JCW Int Wip Cont is not enough, and will not work with Perm Mag Motors which need Dynamic Braking to stop...I have to question if "early 80's Ford pickup and Bronco have the same wiper motor wiring" will be enough...I have studied adding an Int Wip Cont to an '73ES (with Rocker Switches) at length (and that's what it took!), and have done it successfully for a '73ES owner. Contact me directly when you're ready for this project.

Flasher mounting location is not critical, but cable tying it to the harness or some rigid place will prevent rattles.

      Cheers

Thanks for the offer on the delay wiper mod. I'll let you know when I get to that point and may even wait until I see if I can even stand driving this thing. Heck at the rate I'm going it will be a while. I assume your mod is an easy retro fit on a complete car. In the mean time I'll check Thibault. I can get a new one but they're pricey.

"...Even if you hooked up those wires directly to chassis, there wont be any smoke!..."

I was joking, or maybe I should say I was referring more to all the other wiring I messed with. I've torn into this car more than any one I've ever owned - which isn't that many because they were mostly Volvos.

High Beam and O/D Indicator Light Dimmer 1800 1973

    Chris;

I was going to send you to the Owners Manual as well...it look like others have also done that, also given good additional info...combining lamp Wattage and the resistances you measured, one could do some theoretical calculations...if you were really that interested...practically, you could just swap the Black and Yellow wires going to control and try which way worked better...

Here an extract of the Wiring Diagram:

    Cheers

Regarding your question as to which position the switch belongs in, I found this in the 1973 1800ES Owner's Manual page 16...

"31 Dimmer for fullbeams and overdrive warning lamps
During long trips in darkness, the warning lamp for fullbeams and overdrive can be irritating. The glare from these can be dimmed by moving the control to the lower position. The dimmer is off when the control is in the upper position. "

    Hi Chris Mullet,

I'm unsure whether these resource contain an answer helpful to you, as it has been so very long I'd touched an 1800, so here goes:

    - http://www.volvowiringdiagrams.com/?dir=volvo/1800%20Wiring%20Diagrams
    - http://www.sw-em.com/

Sort of thinking Eric planetman and Ron Kwas and folks can best help you.

Your Volvo 1800 is part of your life! Already have!

    Hope that helps yoo.

High Beam and O/D Indicator Light Dimmer 1800 1973

      Hello Chris,

The wiring diagrams I found do not differentiate which is which, but they did show what wattage bulbs are needed for the various lights.

The headlight high beam warning bulb is supposed to be a 3 watt bulb and the O/D warning light bulb is supposed to be a 2 watt.

I would assume that the the higher wattage bulb for the headlight high beam warning bulb would get the higher ohm connection.
