Coolant Block Drain Plug, B230 900 1995

I recently changed anti-freeze on my B230 940 NA and the coolant drain on the block, right side rear broke when loosening. Fortunately, I had another on one of the parts cars but only have one more and don't want to remove it from that car because it has a good engine.

I couldn't find the part number for the drain plug on the online parts places. Does anyone have that part number handy?

Thanks

      Dear jd620,

Hope you're well. You're welcome! I'd saturate the broken fitting with lots of penetrating oil (e.g., Kroil, PB-Blaster, etc.) before trying to remove it.

If you have to remove the nut - which I think screws into the block - I'd: (a) use a wire or stiff plastic brush to clean the block threads and (b) coat the replacement nut's threads with a good quality anti-seize.

Nickel-based anti-seizes aren't cheap, but they'll take temperatures above 2,000⁰F. Such a temperature won't occur in an engine cooling system. But I'd guess a nickel-based anti-seize won't react with cast iron or brass and so is unlikely to deteriorate with time.

      Hope this helps.

      Yours faithfully,

      Spook

    Coolant Block Drain Plug, B230 900 1995

    Hi Jd620,

The superseded part number is #966723. #3531384 is the old number for the same part. This is the part where you attach the drain hose to (not the part remaining on the block). Maybe you could use some suitably sized bolt for a while to plug the one on the block.

    Regards,
    Amarin.

      Dear Amarin,

Hope you're well. Part #966723 - a "crane" in the Volvo lexicon - should be available from a North American Volvo dealer. The cost should be $9-10.

It might be wise also to get #3531383 - a "nut" - which screws into the block, according to the Volvo VADIS diagram. The "nut" should cost about $5 at a North American Volvo dealer.

      Hope this helps.

      Yours faithfully,

      Spook
