AW30-40 code P0715 S90-V90 1998

Trying to diagnose a transmission malfunction code P0715 (generic code that my code reader gives me). The transmission has been shifting a little odd (felt like upshifting late at low speeds). Then one day the flashing arrows came out, and the tranny gave out (shifted into neutral, which allowed me to coast into a parking lot, then it came back to life after I let the car sit for a while and cool, and it got me home). The check engine light came on with the code as well. From what I was able to find on the net, the code is for "Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction". Wonder where the sensor in question is located -- I'm looking as #22 on the diagram below as possible culprit. I believe an electrical issue may be likely -- I've had coolant leak from the back of the engine and onto the transmission for a while, it's a miracle that there haven't been any electrical problems before. Of course, it could be some other wiring problem or something completely different. Any input would be appreciated. Here's the parts diagram for AW30-40:

As Adirondack Blues mentions. Fluid quality and topped up?

P0715 indicates you're using a generic code scanner.

The fault indicates a sensor or the wiring to it may be faulty. The speed sensor on the AW-30?

I can no longer find any PDF version of the Volvo Data Pocmket Guide for 700-900 online.

See the AW 30 entry here in the 700-900-90 FAQ:

Some links for you. Spook mentions the Volvo Pocket Guide PDF file I have is too old.

I'm unsure a P0175 correlates to the AT 3-1-1. Yet as P0175 comes from a generic scanner, and AT 3-1-1

You may need to check the sensor wiring or the sensor itself. As the sensor related to this code is under the car, maybe the wiring has failed or the connection between the sensor and the wire harness connector secure to it has become fouled or disconnected.

See what AW30 sensor you find for sale at iPd, Dave Barton, FCP Euro and the like. Hopefully it is accessible.

Questions?

Hope that helps.

I'll try to retrace the steps in your link:

So I'm guessing the #22 on my diagram looks about right...

I'll report back, it's gonna take me some time

Thanks!

Hi vp965,

I'm unsure the sensor location on your AW30-40. Though it appears sensible at first glance. I'm unsure.

You can look at the sites that have these exploded drawings for a model range by subcomponent within a year and model on a site like the:

https://www.volvopartswebstore.com/

So, following:

Hopefully it is a grimy connector or old transmission fluid that needs a flush to new synthetic. Yet if you test the sensor connector pins, and get no continuity, maybe it is bad?

Or maybe the copper conductor inside the wire insulation has broken? There is not much strain relief or sheath protection in the cable that is part of the sensor.

Hope that helps.

Duffed.

Fluid level OK? Have you drained and refilled with synthetic?

Fluid level was OK when I last checked it, went to re-check it today, it's exactly where it should be, hot and cold. Trans fluid has seen about 30K miles and about 4 years old, I had it changed then with synthetic Redline ATF. It looks fine on the dipstick, clean and pink. The car's been sitting for a few months, I was thinking to start with the fluid change but doubt very much it would change things. I've had the check engine light reset, the flashing lights are gone, but the light and the code have returned right away.

Did you ever find the problem? I have the p0715 code. Have replaced the
sensor and redid the wire, and still get the code.
