Are aluminum and steel front control arms interchangeable on a 940 900

Dear trichard,

Hope you're well. Based on a review of the Volvo VADIS parts diagrams and lists, aluminum and steel control arms will interchange if - and only - the sway bar links are also interchanged.

Aluminum control arms were used on '93 940s sold in the US. Steel control arms were used on '94 and '95 940s sold in the US.

Sway bar links for use with aluminum control arms consist of a steel rod, threaded at both ends, which is secured to the control arm at the bottom and to the stabilizer bar at the top.

Sway bar links for use with steel control arms, consist of a steel rod, with a round, bushing-enclosed steel sleeve at one end (through which it is bolted to the control arm) and a threaded end, that is bolted to the stabilizer bar.

By the way, the control arm stays are the same part for steel or aluminum control arms. The control arm stay is part #3530789 (390.5mm, 15-3/8"], measured from the center of the bolt hole to the end of shaft, that passes through the cone bushings).

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

I have only seen the aluminum control arms on NA cars. My wife's 1993 944T has steel control arms.
