940 struts etc - need advice 900

Thanks to the brickboard I have fumbled my way thru some productive upgrades this summer including rear shocks (very dirty, had to cut out bolts), motor mounts and ac solder repair. My Midwest 940 has seen a lot of salt and I have encountered some roadblocks on the strut replacement, despite reading FAQs etc.

On the struts, I had some troubled getting out abs sensor and ended up prying out abs wire and electrical connector but abs sensor stayed firm in brake hub. I figure I have to replace abs. How do I get sensor out? Any recommendations on abs part source? I see some less expensive aftermarket abs parts. Worth trying?

Also, trouble removing brake hose from brake assembly. I have loosened hose nut to the point of hose wrapping around itself multiple times due to tension but still not free. Concerned about breaking hose. Any advise? How about putting it back in?

Thanks a lot!

I wrecked the abs sensor the first time I put in new strut cartridges, etc. Since, I disconnect the connector under the hood, pull it out the wheel well, and wrap it around the lower part of the strut and secure it with tie wraps. I know this doesn't help you now. You can probably get new sensors on ebay or Amazon or just replace the strut assembly with one from a junkyard. The price may be about the same and 740 strut assemblies with aba work okay, 1991 and later.

It is probably best to remove the brake caliper and pads so you can twist the caliper loose from the hose.

    Good luck!

The sensors are difficult to remove especially if corrosion is evident. When they refuse to come out I have used a drill (3/8" ?) to remove the innards and then went after the rest with small chisels and screw drivers. It involves separating the thin metal shell from the opening it fits into- tedious and time consuming work. Lots of penetrating fluid and patience required. It would be easier to do on the bench then when the assembly is on the car. The best course of action would be to unplug the sensor and remove the strut assembly.

The brake hoses are usually difficult to disconnect on the end that attaches to brake line. If you have the connection to the caliper loose you can remove the caliper and rotate it until it is disconnected from the hose.

If you have a stick of the correct length you can push the brake pedal down part way and hold it there with the stick. This will put the master cylinder piston in a position to prevent the fluid from leaking out with the brake line open.

Thanks guys, I've got the calipers & brake line out. Strut bolts have been removed and wire strut holder is in place. There is a lot of play in strut & ball joint, but I am having some trouble getting strut out of ball joint and free from car. I hate to use a pickle fork on the ball joint and mess up the bushing. Any ideas?

If there is a lot of play between the strut tube and the ball joint you don't need to worry about damaging the ball joint- it sounds like it needs replaced anyway.

If the ball joints are not worn and do not need replaced simply unbolt the ball joints from the bottom of the strut tube and leave the ball joints in place when removing the struts.

I have removed 2 ball joints screws and bolt under ball joint but there is still some tension holding strut in place, I can get some wiggle underneath with a crowbar but wasn't sure that was the best approach. Have unscrew link to stabilizer/ sway and outer tie rod. Not sure what to do next.

You need to get the sway bar link unbolted to get the ball joint to disengage from the bottom of the strut. I don't think it fits very far up into the strut tube; probably not more than 3/16". Please bear in mind I am working from memory on this; I haven't done strut work for some time.

Is it safe to assume you have done your homework and are familiar with the information in the FAQ's?
