front brake clunk 200

Ocasionally at slow speed our 91 240 with ABS clunks on the left front side. You can feel it in the brake pedel. The brakes function fine. It has done this for a while. Any ideas? Thanks for any help

If it only does it once per engine start at about 10-15 MPH then it's probably the ABS system doing its self check routine.

If you think it might be something more than that, jack that wheel up, have an assistant hold the brake pedal, and try to turn the wheel forward and backward as hard as you can to see if you can replicate the noise.

Let's try and narrow it down a bit. Does it clunk only when applying the brakes? Or randomly at any low speed without brake application?

If it only happens when braking, then I would first check the caliper pins and pads. Look for slop, movement etc.

If it happens randomly, do as Phil suggested. Check suspension components as well as brake parts. Ball joint, tie rods, bushings, strut mount etc.

    Hi,

Ideas? I always got ideas. Just like a hill of beans, they turn to gas and gone as quickily to some people's thankfulness! (:-)

Have you had the front struts changed recently?

Sometimes having the lower arms dropped way down to get struts put in loosens the rear retaining nut of the lower arm. Noticeably more on very minor bump or an abrupt swale it in the road about the same time.

Next things are suspension related to bushings or a ball joint. Possibly more noticeable while turning and braking in one direction more than another.

    Phil
