Buying Volvo 240 sedan, need advice 200 1983

So I'm looking at a Volvo 240 GL, 1983. Current owner says they've changed all the fluids, filters, and belts. They've put Brembo discs on the front, and the interior, except the driver side window controls and a cracked dasb, is in great shape. But here's some concerns I have:

Unreported repair. The front left quarter has red under the silver, and it's the only panel with it. Wheels were resprayed in the tire so there is some curb rash. Some rust spots on the hood and rear that need fixing and the tail light covers need replacing. The windshield glue is melting a bit, and the glass has a yellow stain across the top, likely old tint. Had some bondo on the underside but it's been done decently.

What I'm wondering is, owner wants $2000USD for the car. I was thinking of offering $1400. What do you guys think?

I like 89 because it has a lot of 940 parts. I know there are fans of ABS, but I've never felt a need and it could add complications and expense down the road. If you don't need AC, 89 is good

The front ABS does shorten braking distance and you can feel it kick in slippery conditions.

If it stops working, dirty sensors or some other reason, then you are back to "normal" brakes. No real complications other than trying to keep rusty sensors clean.

And having ABS lowers the insurance rate.

I disconnect the AC on all my bricks. I don't live in a hot climate, and it takes some load off the engine.

83 is a problematic year...the ignition system and injector system. first year for the LH injector system...first year for the Volvo/Chrysler ignition - what color is the Distributor cap..is it White?

for an 83 with replaced body panels, bondo and rust.......i would walk away

limit your search for 89-93 preferably 91-93 if you can.

the older ones are ok i suppose but not as refined as the last few years

Plus one on only buying a 240 from 91-93.
At this point, 25 years later, they will be the most headache free.

      Good luck.

        Hi,

What makes 91-93 more trouble free than the 89-90 version of the LH2.4 ?

I know that they have a better windshield gasket, no 25 amp fuse, possibly ABS, and airbag in 90 up. Any other stuff ?

I have an 88, a 90, and a 91, all high mileage and can't say one has been better than the other except for a little better mileage with the 88.

        regards, Peter

91-93 pluses that I know of...

          No wire harness issue.
          Stronger front springs.
          Yellow top injectors.
          93 has the squirter block.

          M47-II 5-speed from 89 on...
          Did 93s get the AW-71?

And yes, #6 fuse inside versus under hood 25 amp and ABS front brakes.

The wiring harness was changed in the 1988 models. Think the bad ones were 84-87??

From what I've read on the BB, the 1988's are one of the best and most reliable MY 240's. Albeit they don't have an airbag, ABS etc....

            Not 100% sure, but I don't think the 93 240's got the AW71.
