Heater Core Replacement 1995 940 - dash take apart etc 900

I am just checking (after reading the FAQ): is the relay tray merely to be dragged over to the left a bit or is it going to need to be removed? Do I need to unwire stuff there (hope not)? Thanks.

You must have looked at the 960 heater core instruction.

I would rather replace the 940 heater core than the front struts.

Scary to think about it but once you get over the fear of the unknown, not that bad. Easier than the AC evaporator. I used screwdrivers to gently pry apart the cover from the base. At worse, allow an easy two days to get over the frustrations, cramps and re-energize your drive. You will know the screw that is impossible to replace and mock it.

A super air tight seal is not required unlike the evaporator seal which could leak water. Even a crack in the cover is not a show stopper. A heater core cover would only leak a little warm air, only when the heater is on, although I did add a little butyl sealant here and there. You will have to cut pick and destroy the gasket you see at the firewall when its time to pull out the heater core. I resealed with RTV but a little foam sealant may have worked better.

THIS IS JUST WRONG, stop and rest, restart, kind of what you do during a fuel pump removal.

Yes there clearly should have been a Kung Fu episode wherein Grasshopper masters the ring of screws with calmness and serenity. For my 940 I will say that none of the screws were especially difficult once well illuminated - thanks to the instruction here. One easy way to get the hardest one is to use a couple of tubes as a "spreader" that holds open a gap so the socket can go straight in through the gap. I didn't bother to replace it.

No wiring needs to be disconnected to replace the heater core.

I had a quick look at the PDF on the heater core replacement and did not see my addition concerning that pesky screw that needs to be removed (but not necessarily replaced) on the heater box. I did a quick write up of my experience and posted it here:

Good luck,
