Leaking Fuel Pump - '90 Turbo Sedan 700

I've been around Volvo 740's for nearly 20 years and I've never seen this. The main fuel pump in a '90 740 Turbo Sedan I service is leaking from around the front face, near where the tower for the electrical connector is located. The fuel system is Bosch LH injection. The gas runs to the rear of the pump, drips on the frame and to the ground. The car seems to run fine and the pump sounds normal (no cavitation). It leaks about one drop every two or three seconds.

I'll have to replace the pump and filter.

Has anyone else seen this?

Leaking Fuel Pump - '90 Turbo Sedan 700

Hi,

I had a Bosch pump on a 240 leak from the body at about the rate you describe.

It turned out to be the FPR which didn't seem to be regulating at all. The return line to the tank was dry and unrestricted.

Other symptoms were that the pump was quite warm at idle and made more noise than was usual.

Peter

I had a fuel regulator go bad on a 740T wagon we had for many years. The problem is quite common. The regulator at the fuel rail fails. The pump draws much too much power and overheats. It also squeals badly indicating cavitation. This one is NOT doing that. It sounds normal and is not hot to the touch. I believe the pump is original to the car, making it 26 years old.

A friend that runs a Porsche restoration facility tells me that if a fuel pump is more than 15 years old and you're driving the car daily, replace it.

Is it leaking from the "banjo fitting"?

From what I can see it doesn't look like it's leaking from the Banjo fitting. It appears to be leaking from the plastic that's on the end of the pump.
