Transmission drain plug is stripped 900 1993

Hello my fellow bricksters

The new to me 940 has a problem as the transmission drain plug or pan has stripped threads and oozes tranny oil.

Never having been to this particular dilemma I am reaching out to the good people here for the simplest and best solution that you personally have used.

I have read the faqs concerning alternative approaches but I am hopeful that someone has had good luck first hand concerning the best method to take. My assumption is there has to be a kit of some sort for stripped drain plugs with all the Quick Change places out there making a mess of things.

ANSWER Transmission drain plug is stripped 900 1993

In case anyone was interested I have an answer to my own question.

It appears the Volvo engineers ensured at least in my case, that the plug would strip before the threads in the Pan did in which case a new drain plug will solve my problem.

I will be sure to clean the pan threads carefully and use a new Crush Washer

Dear oleseahorse,

Hope you're well. I second Onkel Udo II's statement, that there's no reason to drain fluid from the pan. When the fluid has to be changed, use the FAQ procedure.

Further, if it should be the case that the pan's threads have stripped, a replacement pan can be had. This is to be avoided: removing the filler tube is very hard, as the hex fitting seems to have been over-torqued.

Rather than wrestle with that hex fitting, if the pan's threads are damaged, you can clean the pan threads and the plug with solvent - to remove any trace of oil - and apply a good quality epoxy cement. Insert the plug, and allow time for the epoxy to cure. Most automotive epoxies are oil/gas resistant.

Just a follow-up to Spooks and Onkels
comments and recommendations.

Today I received a new drain plug from FCP. Before I installed it I chased the plug threads with a 10 by 1.5 tap. The new plug seemed a little loose in the threads but the crush Washer they supplied is a donut style which seemed to crush nicely and even though I wasn't satisfied with the torque that I was applying to the drain plug I figured if the washer "crushed" leave well enough alone.

This was a new used 93 940 that I don't think ever had its tranny fluid changed. In the past with all my other cars I have always flushed per the faqs, scores of times. In this instance I was a bit skeered and figured a drain and fill was a less aggressive procedure. Little did I know that the drain plug can cause some discomfort.

Now that the new drain plug is in place and I believe not losing transmission fluid I will not mess with it. Thanks again for your thoughts

I was going to ask last night if the plug would still come out.

Now, change the filter (or not), put it all back together and never loosen the plug again. If you need to change fluid, do it using the pressure line to the radiator tranny cooler per the FAQ's for transmission flush.
