Rear Wheel Bearing Removal/Install and Axle Housing "Refresh' 𖛼]󞩹] 900

My daughter's 1993 940 is leaking oil out of the right rear wheel bearing. I saw this person's excellent write-up on replacing the bearing and seals on his 200.

I found a kit at IPD for the 940s. It is part number SKF 103082. Is the procedure about the same for a 940 as a 200 series?

Rear Wheel Bearing Removal/Install and Axle Housing "Refresh' 𖛼]󞩹] 900

I replaced the rear wheel bearing and seals yesterday. Actually, it wasn't too bad of a job. I read the FAQS on the job (Rear Axle and Wheel Bearings: Wheel Bearing Oil Seal) and the writeup had two points that could be clarified:

The sealing ring is very hard to pull off with a puller. A mechanic friend showed me an easy way. He had a cold chisel and a maybe 3 or 4 pound hammer. He just put the chisel on the sealing ring and rapped the chisel a few times and the sealing ring split and came right off. The bearing then came off easily with a press and split halves bearing removal tool.

The old inner seal was not pressed in all the way so I assume it went in with the complete half shaft. The splines go into place before the inner seal meets it's housing. This makes a cylindrical drift unnecessary. I did, however, remove the half shaft after pushing it in and seating the inner seal, bearing and outer seal to see how far the inner seal went in. It felt like it was in the same position as the old seal. The old seal had worn a small ridge on the shaft so I did use a cylindrical drift (pipe fitting) to push it in further a very small amount so that the inner seal would be on a fresh part of the shaft.

Dear jd620,

Hope you're well. Thank you, for your helpful comments. Could you set forth in detail the bearing removal process, specifying how the axel shaft was positioned in the press, and what sorts of jigs were used to remove the bearing itself?

Thanks again for sharing your insights!

Yours faithfully,

Spook
