Brake Master Cylinder Reservoir 200

Hello,

I ordered a whole brake master cylinder assembly (genuine Volvo) from eEuroparts, which I think is related to FCPGROTON (same location).

I compared the unit with what I have on my 1991 Volvo 240. The master cyllinder was same. However, the plastic reservoir on top of it was different. What is on car now has a triangular shape with electronic plug on top where wires connect.

What I bought was a simple rectangular shape plastic bottle with nothing on it.

The package of the new master cylinder box was written as follows:

Volvo
8111006
Brake Cylinder, Exch
Made in Sweden

Did I get a wrong one? Does this have anything to do with ABS? I thought my car was without ABS.

Thanks a lot.

Replacing the reservoir... 200

Just in case you need to swap reservoir make sure the spacing between old and new reservoir outlets are the same. When I replaced my MC last time I ordered one without reservoir from eBay just to keep costs down.

The reservoir is held down by two rubber grommets into the MC. Just gently pull them (the reservoir outlets) out by hand. No clip or screw needed to be undone. Lubricate the rubber grommets with red rubber grease (RRG is brake fluid compatible) and push back your old (pointy) reservoir into the grommets on the new MC.

But before doing the above, with your old pointy reservoir out, clean away any dirt/dust inside/outside with soap, water and old toothbrush. Rinse it well. And dry it well of any water too. A hairdryer could be of help here. So that you could have a clean fresh looking reservoir back. Easier to see the fluid level.

Regards,
Amarin.

91 non-ABS is different 200 1991

The correct answer is you received a direct replacement for a 75-90 240 brake master. The '91 is special, if non-ABS, having the pointy reservoir with the level sensor in, but this reservoir does NOT fit the lookalike reservoir for the ABS cars 91-93.

But your old reservoir will fit your new master, if you just want to get the job done rather than try to explain this all to the parts store.

Hi.

Thank you for reply. So you think I can use the old one on the new MC? For my 1991 Volvo, the electronics does nothing since my car is not ABS? What if just install the new assembly and leave the wire unplugged as it is? Or should I get the correct reservoir. It seems this one may fit.

When I type 6819772 online, it does show that pointy reservoir.

You've got a tough road ahead, as Onkel pointed out, finding the correct one-of-a-kind reservoir for the 91 non-ABS.

I tried, in my previous response, to make it clear to you, that both reservoirs, the one for the 91 ABS car and the one for the 91 non-ABS car, are in fact "pointy" but as you may inevitably find out for yourself, have different spacing in their outlets.

The pointiness is identified with the level sensor. This "electronics" is what works your brake failure light. The 75-90 reservoir does not have this because those cars incorporate a differential pressure sensor in the hydraulics to operate that brake failure light. It has nothing whatever to do with ABS. It tells you when the brake fluid is low, usually because the pads are worn.

I would not bet against Onkel for his case of beer. I did my best to find a correct part number for the reservoir alone, but was unsuccessful. Not sure who can help you these days, unless you run into a Volvo parts counter man who's been on the job for 25 years. That's why I suggest you may want to do the expedient thing and transfer your "rare" reservoir to the new master cylinder, which I just assume you are replacing because of the cylinder and not the reservoir.

Any chance you have a 1991?

Yes. It is 1991 Volvo 240.

OK, if you do not have ABS (the unit is pretty obvious) you STILL need an ABS master cylinder reservoir and I am pretty sure the ABS master cylinder.

Prior to 1991 all 240's used the "octopus" switch for the brake failure warning light. You have a unique situation where you car does not have that switch so they hooked it up to the low fluid level switch the ABS cars use.

So, in order to maintain the that light, you either have to swap reservoirs if possible or get an ABS MC because I would bet a case of my favorite beer that even if the 1991 non-ABS master cylinder is different from the ABS, no one has one.

what you have is a master cylinder for a NON abs car.
it sounds like you HAVE abs, so indeed you have the wrong one.
