OBD Codes for CPS - Yet car runs OK. ??? 200

Hi Folks,

I'm getting OBD codes from plug holes #2 and #6 indicating loss of RPM sensor, yet the car seems to run fine.

#2 code 1-3-1

#6 codes 1-4-4 and 2-1-4

The codes turn on the CEL.

The car starts and seems to run OK. The rpm sensor is not that old.

So I'm looking at an intermittent short somewhere?
I checked the plugs under the dash on the passenger side. Will check the CPS plug next.

Suggestions?

Most every part swapped at some point except the M47...

Thanks,
Bert

OBD Codes for CPS - Fixed 200

It took 5 minutes at most to get the CPS swapped. Third time doing this chore and my long arms do help... I think I've earned my CPS merit badge.

    No codes. Good to go.

It is pretty obvious both your computers acknowledge some kind of short-term loss of RPM signal but apparently not long enough for you to notice it.

If mine, I would as you already plan, clean and examine the CPS connector for push-back of the terminals, and try again.

Check the resistance also. I have twice found "new" Bougicord CPS units to exhibit early mortality. It is a tough part to make, and of course, the same ones are not being made in car-production quantities nor are they being quality controlled by car manufacturer's incoming inspection. So, resign yourself, if the connector cleaning yields no change, to lay on top of a plank and swap in a new sensor.

Or keep lifting fuse 6 to reset the CEL, codes, and adaptive trim hoping it "goes away."

If you think nobody cares if you're alive, try missing a couple of car payments.

      Thanks Art.

So I pulled the CPS plug, it looked OK and I reconnected it. Popped fuse #6. Cleared the codes. Started the car and rechecked the codes. All 1-1-1 now.

Guessing the CPS plug was the culprit.

I do love it when the codes read 1-1-1.

Hmmm. Not to be a buzzkill, but I'd guess it is a little soon to declare victory. Keep checking the codes when you think of it; some can arise without setting the check engine light. I'll cross my fingers for ya.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a broken fan belt and leaky tire.

Yep. Went for a 200 mile drive and the codes returned.

I did develop a small exhaust leak near the 02 sensor. Don't know if that would effect anything...

Might just swap in a CPS.

That's what I would do. I can't see how the codes you reported could be related to the exhaust leak, unless that leak somehow directed excessive heat to the CPS or its wiring. Still, other codes would result if the exhaust is leaky.

It seems like a lot of suppliers are only interested in plugging the hole with a part, rather than making sure the part is of high quality. -Benski

        Mr Nabisco,

Don't we all love it when we get that code. Unfortunately this doesn't apply to every situation. May us all be reminded there are many confounding no start conditions with 1-1-1 which need case to case basis troubleshooting.

        Regards,
        Amarin.
