Please help ASAP with Steering Wheel Thump 1992 240 Wagon 200

Hi Everyone!

I just replaced my blower motor on a 1992 240 wagon with help from a friend. All is back together, but when I turn the steering wheel to the right, I hear a slight thump.

I'm wondering if something is out of place on the lower driver side panel. Any thoughts?

Also, the steering wheel intermittently would lock up on me. Not sure what I might be messing up there.

E-gads, what a job!!

Help??

With gratitude,

Susan

The thump and locking up on the steering wheel could be the universal joint on the steering column sticking. Look under the hood and locate the universal joint in the steering column and have someone watch the universal while you turn the wheel. If it is sticking, you should be able to see the joint move out of line at the same time it thumps or locks up.

Thanks Jimo! I will check this out. The wheel was locking up when I'd turn it about a quarter turn to the left with the ignition off (had to move it a few times to get the instrument cluster out). When I did this, it would get stuck in that position and I couldn't turn the key. Then it would magically start at some point. Strange! Thanks again! Susan

Hi Susan,

Nothing strange going on there.

When you remove the key, the steering lock doesn't automatically engage. You'll need to turn the steering wheel and then you'll hear it click on.

The front wheels offer some resistance to the lock, so it's not unusual to require removal of that resistance by moving the steering wheel a bit before the key will be able to turn and release the lock

Experiment a bit if this is not clear.

Peter
