Noise coming from behind dash 444-544 1965

I have a loud clicking noise coming from under the hood, up against the dash. Doesn't appear to be the speedometer. It stops when I am idling and quiets a bit when I get up to around 50. Any ideas, my friends?

Sounds a lot like the clicking I have and mine is coming from the trip meter, not the speedometer.

Kind of a long shot, but SUs that are WAY out of adjustment (IE: One carb being WAY leaner than the other) can make some weird rattles at certain engine speeds.

Certainly worth a look if you haven't figured out the noise already.

Also double check that your hood is actually latched. It's easy to forget to secure it after you open it up.

One way to locate a noise is to take a piece of 5/8 or 3/4 inch hose 4 or 5 feet long - a hunk of old garden hose or automobile heater hose will do.

Hold one end up to your ear, and search around with the other end.

Check the voltage regulator while you are at it.

How loud is "loud"? I have an annoying clicking sound that I believe comes from my speedometer/odometer head with the cable and the odometer gear being suspect.

The failure of an exhaust gasket (at the head or on the header junction) would be much louder and audible at idle with the hood up and your head in there.

Noises can be elusive, with the perceived position of the noise being totally different to what is causing it.
Check the hood clamp lever/mechanism. Does the back edge of the hood seat properly onto the padded strip? Maybe it is missing?

    Can you be more specific?
Battery loose? Heater core loose? Defroster outlet loose? Instrument cluster loose? Left side of the car? Right? Etc., etc.

Fortunately, there are not a lot of things attached under the dashboard on a 544. Get a friend to stick his head up underneath there while you're driving and pinpoint a location of the noise.

If the noise increases in relation to throttle load, it could be an exhaust manifold leak.
