Sachs Clutch Cross Reference Numbers 444-544

Been looking to pick up a Sachs clutch kit for a decent deal and while I'm aware of the various vendors that sell them (VP, Vintage Imports (Olof),etc.), I'm having a hard time figuring out what is compatible with the 544/M40 should I look elsewhere.

IPD lists the following cross referenced parts:

270505, 273633, 271263, SAC-271263, 4K1001

Most distributors seem to sell the 271263 kit but either with or without the throw-out bearing.

There are a lot on ebay that have the KF242-01 or KF242-05 label that are supposedly compatible with the 122 of the 544's era. I've also seen some 270505 that match the IPD interchange.

Any suggestions?

I bought my clutch replacement at IPD and it came with the new throwout bearing and a plastic key that keeps things lined up while I bolted the clutch on. I have a 1964 Volvo PV544 B20 engine. Clutch works great!

I believe the clutch kit by LUK model 22-001 will work. I have a friend that installed one one his 122 and loves it. Look for it on Ebay.

That's an alternative I haven't heard of before.

Can anyone else speak to the compatibility of the LUK to a 1963 544 with a M40?

      Thanks!

A 1963 car may have come originally with a coil spring type clutch rather than the later diaphragm. The only question to my mind is if the clutch fork is correct for the diaphragm type release bearing. I think the later set-up is completely usable - but not positive. The pressure plate bolt pattern will be the same. The disc will be the right diameter and have the correct splines for an M40. Be sure to also replace the pilot shaft bearing.
For what it's worth--the Rock Auto catalog lists the same clutch kit for the 122 from 1962-1968 - and only the release and pilot bearings for earlier cars- no clutch listed-so maybe '61 was the cut-off year for the spring type. -- Dave

          This is great information.

I wonder if someone could verify that the clutch fork on a '63 544 would be compatible with the newer style diaphragm clutch kits mentioned in previous messages.

I used the Sachs KF24201 kit (from Rock Auto) in my PV444 B18/M40 conversion and it all went together well. Haven't driven it yet, but everything installed corrected.

I know of another member that recommended this kit after installing it in his 1960 PV544 with a B20/M40 conversion, as well.

Yep! Confirmed. We have diaphragm Sachs clutches in each of our PVs and I've installed both Sachs and Borg&Beck kits in other PVs.

Your 63 clutch fork is the same that was used in the B18 fitted 122 and 1800 models through the 1968 model year. You won't have any trouble.

That's fantastic news, Cameron! These clutch kits are cheaper too!

Cameron, can you just confirm the part numbers of the kit you used? That would seal the deal for me.

Always buy as a 3 piece kit. The release bearing must match the cover due to the height. You'll be taking it all apart again and replacing it if you fit the wrong one.
