Hi all,

I just got an 85 240 sedan for $450. The speedometer/odometer does not work. Could you point me to some troubleshooting resources?

    I think that 85 still had the mechanical speedometer. If the speedometer is not working, forget the odometer repair for now. Make sure that the speedo cable is connected to the back of the cluster. Its held in place by a finger tightened knurled nut. If it is snugly connected, disconnect it and observe the small shaft inside the cable while the car is rolling, it should be spinning. These observations should put you on the right path.

      Aha,the problem was that the cable was disconnected. There is no knurled nut. Nothing on the Cable end to attach it. This seems odd. I was able to feed the speedo cable into the back of the speedometer housing from underneath, after shooting some cable lubricant into the housing for luck. The speedometer works now, as does the odometer.
