My 960 outside temperature gage always reads 88 degrees..... 900

Has anyone run into this? Is it a sign of a bad connection or probe?

Dear Mr. Weekend,

Hope you're well. I concur with jimo: the sensor - located on the underbody, inboard of the driver's headlight - likely has failed. It is Volvo Part #1347010: MSRP is around $35.00.

The sensor's two tubular electrical contacts may be corrosion-bonded to the the wiring harness connector's terminals. That might account for the malfunction. Corrosion is likely to frustrate separation of the sensor from its wiring harness.

It might be easier to get a replacement at a salvage yard. This sensor was used on C/S/V70s (all years), 850s (all years), 960s (all years). If the part comes from afar - or if the yard doesn't allow you to remove the sensor - ask that the donor car's sensor wiring harness be cut so as to leave you six inches (150mm) of wire. You can then splice the replacement sensor to your car's wiring harness.

If you want to remove your car's sensor, saturate the connector with DeOxit or a similar corrosion-dissolver. Allow DeOxit time to work: the electrical contacts fit tightly. It will take time for DeOxit to work its way through micro-channels in the corrosion. Even then, separation of the wiring contacts is delicate work.

If DeOxit does not restore the sensor to proper operation, saturate the wiring connector with PB Blaster or similar penetrating oil (e.g., Kroil). A penetrating oil will lubricate the contacts - free of corrosion - and ease removal.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Well, the sensor came in, never did find the old one, but I did find the wire tied up underneath the a/c condenser. Luckily the wire still had the brass female connectors, so I attached the new sensor and wrapped it up with good electrical tape and wire tied it to the tow eyelet bracket. It works fine, dang it was hot today!!

Dear Mr. Weekend,

Hope you're well and glad the ambient temp sensor works properly. In that exposed place - under the air-conditioning condensor - electrical tape will soon peel. You might want to get some butyl rubber tape and cover the tape-wrapped sensor connector, or remove the electrical tape, and replace it with butyl rubber.

Butyl rubber is a sticky black rubber, that comes on a roll. It bonds to itself and to clean (non-oily) metals and plastics. It does not harden with time/heat.

With just hand pressure, butyl tape forms a water-proof "boot". Start about two inches from the connector and wrap towards the connector, overlapping each turn by 1/8". A couple of layers should suffice. Then, use your fingers to compress the tape. That ensures a water-proof seal.

Most places that repair auto glass and do auto/home/industrial air-conditioning work have butyl rubber tape. Butyl rubber tape might also be had at home improvement stores, as it can be used in some roof repairs.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Thanks Spook and Jimo!! I went ahead and ordered a new sensor from Rock Auto, and I'll let you know how it went. I just bought this wagon, and have been going through it, this is the last thing I have to fix (for now). It only has 106k on it, the previous owners sold it cheap because they thought the transmission had failed. It just needed a new TCM. Loving my first Volvo!

The sensor is probably bad. It is called an ambient temperature sensor and is located in the left side of the air guide under the front bumper.

Jimo
