91 240 a/c compressor relay 200 1991

A/c compressor relay went out on my 91 240. Is there a generic relay I can snag from the parts store or must I order one from IPD? Thanks!

Hi!

The relay you are talking about is a time delay (up to 5seconds). It turns on the compressor after you flip the snow flake switch or are starting the engine after you have left that switch on.
Luckily they did not build this time delay feature into the brain of the ECU. The ECU only controls the kick up in idle for the extra load.

The idea of the extra time is a little bit of overkill or engineering over thought.

A purpose of a relay is to transfer a heavier amount of current on a device that can carry or switch that current. A cheaper or smaller switch in a specified small space might become overheated.

You can put a jumper in that socket of the relay to temporary connect or full time connect, those two wires, back together, so you will be able to use your A/C again.

I did this on my '86 but that car uses a thermostat to turn on the A/C. A thermostat has heavier contacts inside. So in reality, it does not need that relay. My jumper is permanent in my '86.

On my '91 I have not had this failure occur. I have not researched whether the snow flake switch can do the job permanently but it seems that by using a bypass wire it might stay on all the time.

I made my jumper out a short piece of wire the same gauge as the wire going to the socket.
I put on two male spade terminals, one each end, so I can plug it in and remove it, if I ever need to replace the relay. So for years on the '86, I have not.
If I did, I would keep the wire in the car for the next failure or an emergency jumper somewhere else.

This is the option, you can use, until you can resolve the timer circuit board as a possible fix.
Bad soldering or the solder itself, plaques the system relay, that controls the fuel pumps and fuel injector circuit in these cars over the years.

Hope this gives you some insight on what needs to be done.

Phil

Try taking it apart and reflowing the solder joints
