Wheel Bearings 900

Hello . 1994 940 346,000 miles . I bought this car at ~ 250,000 miles . Do not know previous maintainence . Wheels front & rear turn fine & no humming while driving . I was thinking as it does have pretty high mileage that I should either grease or maybe even replace front & rear wheel bearings . I stopped in at a NAPA Today . They told me that these are sealed units that can not be greased and whole wheel hub gets replaced rather then just bearings . Is this true ? Someone also told me no need to grease / replace as they last a lifetime . Is this true ? Thanks for advice & input on this .

lifetime means the part, not you or the car's lifetime. you will need to replace some lifetime part at some point. good luck, chuck.

hi sages- was always curious what the hell lifetime meant. thought it meant the so guaranteed part would be replaced free of charge to the original purchaser if said purchaser had the receipt, there was no abuse to the part and he could remember his draft lottery number, regardless of age or mileage but times have changed as we move into the age of double speak. btw how bad is the replacement of rear 240 wheel bearings. used to pull out the axles from the differential splines after removing clips behind the diff cover or removing a bolt on plate on the hub. then you would have to press off the old bearings on the axle. but sounds like a 3F job on the 5F scale of difficulty(almost like the blower motor r and r , heh?). thanks tons oldduke

    Dear Hoola,

Hope you're well. Front wheel bearings and hubs are a single unit. If they turn without humming/groaning, leave them alone. As they'll likely need to be replaced before too long, you might want to acquire spares.

Replacing rear wheel bearings is a non-trivial task relative to replacing front wheel hubs. The flat plate inboard of the brake rotors needs to be removed. The bolts, that secure the plate, will need lengthy saturation with a penetrating oil, e.g., PB Blaster, Kroil, etc. The axle will need to be removed and reinserted. The latter may be time-consuming.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook
