new non oe temp gauge temp sending unit installation 1800 1966

Hello, I was hoping to find out the pitch and thread of the water temp gauge connection point on the head of my B18B engine on my 1966 Volvo 1800S. The ones that came with my kit don't fit. I called Autometer and the tech asked for this info. I appreciate any info about this subject. Thank you.

I went through this when I replaced the sender on my B20E. Unfortunately, I can't remember the details of the adapter that I got to fit in the hole in the head. However, if you still have your old sender, take it along with your new sender to a hydraulic fittings specialist. They should be able to source the required adapter, or they can at least tell you the pitch / dia / thread type on you existing sender so that you can order an adapter.

What type of gauge, mechanical or electronic?

          Electronic.

No one makes a proper adapter for any of the electronic gauges unless they happen to use the same senders as Volvo used which is highly unlikely. The problem is the depth of the seat/hole as the threads are standard 5/8" x 18 tpi, but no one makes them long enough to seal.

So you will need a custom made adapter which is not hard to make.

First you will need to see if the replacement gauge manufacturer has a sender that has 1/8 NPT threads and most of them do.

Then you will need an old Volvo electronic sender to use for the base of the adapter which is then gutted, drilled and tapped to 1/8 NPT.

My brother has done this many times and I do have used senders if you want him to make you one.

I know that some (all ?) of the 1800s used a mechanical temperature gauge. Is the hole at the back of the head for the temperature sensor on the B18 different than the hole on the B20E on my 140? If its the same size and thread hole as on the B20E, I had no problem getting the appropriate adapter to fit the electronic sensor in to the original location. Based on visual examination the electronic sensor looks like 1/8 NPT. I know that they did shorten the adapter fitting a tad. Lack of thread on the fitting was definitely not an issue.

The holes are the same for all 4 cylinder engines up to about 1986 and all 240 Volvos.

I have NEVER be able to find one that actually works. Can you supply a part number or supplier for the adapter you used?

I did this 2+ years ago and have no record of the part #. The adapter does not have a part # on it (that I can see with it installed).

This is the website for the vendor that I got the part from.

                  http://www.airtechproducts.ca/

If you email them the inside and outside diameter size requirements and the length, they may be able to give you a product number (and supply it if you don't mind the courier cost for a small value item!). I know that they had to order the part as it was a non stock item. The vendor is generally pretty accommodating. They do a lot of custom work for local car guys. I had them fabricate SS brake lines for both my 142E and my old 745T along with a replacement oil cooler line for my 745T when the end fitting failed.

I can post a photo of the installed adapter if that is of any use.

                It's the same thread for all B18 and B20 heads (except I don't know about the '75 B20). It's not a pipe thread -- it's 5/8-18, as Eric said.
