D-type overdrive slow to engage cold. Where to start? 120-130

I put an m40 with D-type overdrive in the 220. It's slow to engage cold. Take a mile to warm up. Seems fine after.

I suspect the solenoid, since it's electrical and everything else works ok and is not too noisy. I'd like to just get under it and start unbolting, but the 5 pages of tiny type in the haynes manual kinda bugs me, not really addressing this specific issue.

The solenoid appears to be a sealed part, but sometimes these thing can be opened and fixed. It could be just full of oil.

On the lighter side, I found an original non-greasy 1976 edition of a Haynes "120&130 plus 1800 sports" shop manual in a thrift shop. the only things I haven't really seen a hundred times before was the diagrams of the innards of the tailgate.

D-type overdrive slow to engage cold. Where to start? 120-130

I have a J type OD I installed years ago on my 68 122. I had the same issue in colder weather. I replaced the solenoid. Same result. I replaced the 30 weight oil with Dextron 2 automatic transmission fluid. A little better but not solved. I gave it a rest and live with it. It never happens in warmweather so it's OK for now.

The D type solenoid doesn't suffer from the hydraulic problems the J type ones can do. The OD may need new O rings but it needs to come back out to do that. Don't use atf. 30 weight or 20/50 is fine but the level needs to be up to the mark. Have you checked it since fitting? Some oil needs to get back into the OD after filling so it's normal for it to need topping up after running for a few miles. Cleaning the filter a good idea if you didn't do it before fitting. You have a Haynes now and that is quite good for gearbox/OD.

Yes, it was low on oil. Still slips a little in reverse. 120-130

At least adding some made it work better. Now it leaks.

It seems to slip a little in reverse, now less than it did. I should probably pull the filter and check for disintegrating pads.
