My '93 240 has this odd problem where it sometimes just won't start. It will turn over rapidly and under normal circumstances starts easily. However, I know in 2 seconds it is not going to start. One day, it started after 20 turns of the key but overtime I put it in reverse to back out of the driveway it died immediately.

After it was towed to the shop, they replaced the airflow mass meter and the crank position sensor.

It worked fine for about two weeks and then did the same thing again. Had it towed again. After a week it finally refused to start at the shop. They cleaned some contacts, checked the fuel pump (getting enough fuel) and pronounced it fixed.

It worked for two weeks and then Friday morning it refused to start and hasn't started since.

Ideas? I'm clueless, the shop is clueless and I can't keep having it towed at $80 a pop.

Your post hit close to home for me as my 93 is also having issues which I cannot seem to resolve and I also forgot my password and need to reset it. I have been chasing my tail for a couple of months with the 93 240. I have ran the diagnostics and have cleaned, tested and replaced just about every pertinent component short of the ECU, which brings me to my question. Is the ECU for the 93 240 a one year only unit? The Hollander interchange shows it interchanging with 91 and up but the numbers on these units don't match up? Does anyone have experience with this interchange?

You should start your own thread and explain all the Symptoms and steps you have taken to date. It is not likely the ECU, the last 3 digits should be 951 if your 93 is LH 2.4.

Most all ECU's for the 240 from 89 and up will work unless you have a are LH 3.1.

First do you have spark and fuel at the spark plugs?

I hate to say this, since those so called, mechcanics, threw YOUR wallet at it.

It could be as simple as a bad rotor button or the cap of the ignitions distributor.
Even the coil wire can go bye-bye the way of a slow death.

Do you have any spark from the coil wire. Pull it from the distributor and lay it about 1/4" from a strut tower bolt and then to the engine block somewhere.

Back up from there and you look at the connector on the power stage. It's nicely hidden out of site behind the battery. Pull it off and on several times to scrub the contacts inside.

Rule out ignition first and then suspect the system relay. Especially if you don't hear fuel pumps hum just after you stop cranking.

If you hear them, still suspect the relay.
The system relay turns on injectors as well but you want know that unless, you close it manually and the car starts.
I open it up and inspect it. I wrap it with a rubber band and roll the engine.

Are the plugs getting wet with gas. Check a plug after a no start.

It's sick, they went the route of the AMM. IMO they are not an intermittent cause of no starts!

Hi Phil,
I had an uneasy feeling about letting them replace that AMM.

This place has serviced the car for years, back to when they ONLY serviced Volvos, and they started off on 240s. I think now that they have lost their way on these since they started servicing Lexuseseses (Lexi?) as well. And, I think now they are guessing.

I have new wires, plugs, rotor, cap, etc on hand for replacement and I'd already replaced the fuel injection relay under the dash. Will check for spark and whatnot when I replace that stuff, if it stops raining on weekends or after work.

I had suspected a fuel delivery problem but they did say it is getting fuel in the right amounts.

I'll be damned if I'm getting it towed again!

Your mechanic is just guessing if you have to have one find one who has knowledge of this model. Check your OBD codes and post them here.

When it doesn't start do you have speak and fuel?

Two very common causes for a no start are the fuel system relay and corroded or loose fuses.
