static timing a B18 ? 120-130 1967

I had to pull the distributor to get the cam out and now I need to set the static timing. The manual is a little less than helpful - if it doesn't start, turn the distributor until it does.

There must be a way to line up the oil pump, distributor and timing marks so it will start reliably. The maker of the new cam thinks it is important that the engine fire right away and run at 2500 rpm for 15-20 minutes.

For example, with an H Farmall you line up the 2nd notch with the pointer, turn the distributor clockwise, turn on the ignition, turn the distributor counterclockwise and when you get a spark at the coil wire, tighten the distributor clamp bolt. It works great.

Anyone know what the timing should be set to to make a similar proceedure work with a B18 ?

    I'm not sure what you're asking for.
    An alignment of the distributor drive?
    Or a static timing setting?

    First thing I would do is align the distributor drive to the 5 degree position according to the attached photo. Note that the slot in the drive portion is asymmetrical and that you align it in the proper position.

    Then I would static time the car to 5 degrees BTDC. After it starts and warms up, I would set the timing to 22 degrees BTDC @ 1500 RPM.

    I do not like the instruction to just "turn the distributor until it starts".
    If it doesn't start at 5 degrees BTDC (static), then something else is wrong.

    Static timing a B18/20 is essentially like that of the Farmall, with variation to accommodate the difference in Distributor drive (for the Distributor Drive shaft to engage and drop fully into slot of the Oil Pump, rotate Crankshaft with a wrench on Cranknut until they line up and shaft noticeably drops in...only after that can you proceed with setting timing) .       I'd like to offer an similar but slightly different method offered in the link Ron posted. This method does not require that the ignition system be operational (but only works with points type ignition)--or even that the car have a working battery or coil. Follow the steps as far as installation of the distributor drive, distributor and set the points gap--set the crank marks to the setting preferred (10 degrees initial will work well with a B18). Back off the distributor so the points are closed. NOW--slip a thin piece of paper between the points and as you rotate the distributor forward pull up on the paper--when it will slip out the timing is set. -- Dave

    cant remember how I did it but it was from ithe haynes manual....it is probably in the shop manual as well, as haynes just lifts straight from the manual, often.
    The shop manual is online for free somewhere....
