Fuel pumps. 140-160

What is the difference between 142 and a 544 fuel pumps? Thanks.

    I have the cam out of my B18 and the fuel pump cam measures 1 5/16" in diameter. It is a round section that is offset to give 7/32" lift. The cam is stamped B, but measures out like an A cam. I also have a brand new Iskenderian Z-66-005 cam that is similar to the Volvo K cam. That fuel pump cam also measures 1 5/16" and gives 7/32" lift.

    If you are asking about mechanical fuel pumps, then nothing is different, well mostly nothing different.

    All of the B18, B20 and B30 fuel pumps are interchangeable.

    However, the very early fuel pumps have female NPT threaded holes for either brass fittings or for fuel hose assemblies with crimped fittings on the ends, but by using straight hose barbs allows you to bolt 1 on a later car.

      Thank you for your response. The reason why I asked,is I thought I might have installed the wrong fuel pump a couple years ago on my 142s. You might recall the original problem I had with the mechanical fuel pump was an oil leak between the pump flange and the cardboard gasket due to the flange being warped. I purchased a new pump and installed it with the two gaskets and plastic spacer, not over tightening the mounting bolts.Everything seemed fine after a couple months. But then i noticed that the diaphragm screws were coming loose. Ok so once a week I would tighten them down, but it got to the point where the screws would start to strip from constant tightening. So I took the pump out and took all the screws out and drilled out the tapped holes and replaced them with hex nuts, bolts, and lock washers using loctite. I reinstalled the pump with fresh gaskets and the spacer, drove the car a couple months and the pump seemed fine. Last week I adjusted the valves and put in a new cork gasket. After that i decided to clean most of the engine oil on the fuel pump side of the engine. The next I lifted the hood and noticed an oil leak between the gasket again. Seems to me that the pump actuating arm is causing too much stress on the pump body, and something is causing the pump flange to warp causing the oil leak like the previous pump. Any ideas what's causing this to happen? Thank you.

        Steven;

        It sure sounds like you have something weird and unusual happening at you FuPu. I've never heard of membrane screws needing constant and repeated retightening... How much "lift" are you getting from Cam eccentric?...can you measure? Do you have Spacer fitted? Is Engine mounting surface planar?

        Good Hunting!

          As Ron says, all rather strange. Might be an obscure after market pump. Whilst I admire your ingenuity with the bolts I would have fitted a new pump and driven off into the sunset.

            Thanks For your response. I don't know how much lift I'm getting on the cam. Don't know too much about the technical aspect of this motor. Could there be a problem with the cam? The motor was rebuilt in 1985/86 (almost 300,000 mi. ago) by Vern Adair of Volpar. The only internal part on the motor that has been replaced was the timing gear, from phenolic to a metal. This is the 2nd aftermarket fp I've installed. The first one was made by Scantech, I believe,and the one in the engine now I bought from Fcp. Since the motor was rebuilt, and prior to these last fps, i really don't remember having any problems with the fp. Would a fp for a 544 be a solution? Seems like the actuating arm is shorter and may cause less stress and vibration. Thank you.

              i had the same problem wit the diaphram screws working loose. never had a problem at the block.

              the aftermarket pumps are junk! find a original pierburg or A/C pump and get a rebuild kit for it from planetman.

              once it got so loose it was leaking fuel, scary!

              seems weird...if you have the original cam in there the more likely suspect is a poor fp. there are many close but no cigar fp s out there. My experience has been with aftermarket fp that give too much pressure, sounds like yours has the wrong actuating rod....I'm guessing this pump was used on many motors and was speced with different actuating arms etc to fit said differences. If you have your old fp have a look at the arm dimensionally, or ask someone here to measure theirs. in ay case you probably need a new fp....
