Kick down button transmission 200

Hi Guys !

Got a new one for the forum. (or at least couldn't find this in the search anywhere)

Driving along about 35 mph and suddenly the kick down 3rd gear orange arrow lights up on the dash and there's a continuous sound as if the volvo was a small airplane and the autopilot was warning of an imminent crash.

Deselect the button on the side of the shifter and the orange light stays on but the beep goes away.
Press the button again and the orange light still stays on and the returns.

Appears to operate as a 3-speed transmission in both settings, with the annoying beep or without. but I'd have to give it a better test run, there's a chance it's a 4 speed box with the orange light and no beep sound and a 3-speed box with the light and the beep.

Reved up the engine and went up to 60mph and the problem went away and I had my 4-speed gear box back.

Next day, same location, same speed, same problem, only I couldn't get it to clear. Turned off the ignition, started again and the problem is still there.

Is this a relay ? Solenoid sounds like it's 'clicking' when the button is pressed.

has anyone ever run into this ? kind of surprised me with the beeeeeep sound.
I've heard of the kick down solenoids wearing out and users on the forum not being able to get their transmissions to a 3-speed box only, but never this where it activates while you are driving and makes a noise like it is going to self-destruct.

    Thanks guys,

I'll get under there and check the wiring and the relay behind the glove box.
The sound is most peculiar ... it is actually emanating from the old door chime that is activated when you leave the keys in the ignition and open the door.
I've long since deactivated this from the door switches, but I'm pretty sure the long constant beeeeeeep is coming from the same location just above my right knee under the dash. That is the only device on-board that kicks out a sound. it's funny it should be activated with the transmission kick down short circuit .. and it's a funny it's a constant sound and not intermittent like the door chime.

I'll try to report back if I find some cable problems. Wont be for a couple more days, as there's still mud and snow in these parts.

Any idea how to tell if the relay is bad, without swapping it out with a replacement ?

Before you get too far into checking relays, wiring, and solenoids, give fuse 11 a spin. You might get lucky there.

If not, be sure to grab the dropdown selection for the year of your 240 for specific help troubleshooting the relay circuitry.

What model and year is your auto?

As for the crash warning sound.
All I can come up with is that the PO installed this for "fun" and to play a joke on the new owner.

Yes, I agree check your switch wiring. And yes, there is a relay. It is located left of the glovebox once you remove the glovebox.

I'm certainly no electronics expert, but it is most likely the overdrive relay or corroded OD wiring from shifter to solenoid that is preventing the 3rd to 4th gear shift. Check the tranny tunnel "lip" where the wiring leaves the shifter and goes under the car. My 90 rubbed there and wore off so much wire insulation that the wires corroded and caused the shifting failure. Also check the wiring where it attaches to the solenoid.

I have no clue what the noise is...:)
