retrieving float ball for fuel sender unit 200 1987

You know what happened, the sender unit was almost out and the float ball popped off and disappeared into the tank. It is not in the central well, but somewhere in the outer reaches of the tank.

Does anyone have a technique for fishing it out of the tank ?

Thanks

Greg

I have some spare ones in my parts bin. Shoot me an email @ xraybob240@comcast.net to see what we can work out. I've lost a few over the years in other 240's and they won't hurt anything floating around in there.

Hi xraybob,

Thank you for your kind offer, but I think I'm good for now.

I was in the process of removing a sending unit from a parts car and lost the ball. In the light of that experience I was able to remove the bad sender with the ball attached. I'll fish out the lost one when I finish harvesting good parts off the dead car.

If you don't care about the tank, just pour water in until the float ball appears in the access hole. But the shop vac idea is a good one. Or just leave the ball in there, you have another on the bad sender.

Before you toss or replace the sender, clean it with brake cleaner. Sitting for years will create a dirty spot and your sender will not work as advertised. I always check mine for ease of movement and with a multimeter to make sure there are no breaks in the readings while slowly moving it.

Maybe a goldfish net?

Actually it's a two person job. One gets the blower going ( ensure no sparks) from the garage vac directed at the open filler neck to create some air movement. The other goes fishing with the goldfish net as the ball goes floating by. Don't worry if you miss it the first time as it will circulate 'round and come by again.

After you retrieve the ball, carefully read up on the sender reinsertion procedure in Arts "in the tank" so you don't have to do it again.

I would be a little nervous about sucking gas fumes with an electric motor. I have no authority on the subject, however; just like being cautious.

You would likely never reach a proper fuel air mixture if you were "sucking" to cause an issue...way too lean but his application indicates blowing (the other side of the shop vac) so getting woozy from the fumes is a much higher risk.

On the second one I realized that the heel of the sock should be opposite the float. Lifting the heel out makes room for the ball to come out.
