High idle on 940 GLE 16V 900 1992

Hello everybody,

Just got my hands on '92 940 16 valve with 110k km. The problem is that when I stop the car the RPM is about 1500. When I crank cold or hot engine it is running about 650, 700 RPM, when I drive it and come to stop, even when I shift to P and release the brake pedal the RPM goes high.

How to solve this problem?

    Dear RobertD,

    Hope you're well. Are there any codes? If so, report them.

    If there are no codes, clean the idle air control valve (IACV, see FAQs for the "how to"). If a cleaning does not help, replace the IACV with a known-good used unit. If that cures the problem, put in a new IACV or simply get another used unit, test it, mark on it the test results/date, and put it in your spare parts inventory. If an IACV change does not help, so report and we'll go from there.

        Dear RobertD,

        Hope you're well. Replace the Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) with a new unit, or with a "known good" unit, i.e., an IACV that has been installed in a smooth-running car, that still ran smoothly after installation of that used IACV.

        If you don't have a spare "known good" IACV, get two (or three) used IACVs and install them, one after the other. If the car runs smoothly, mark the IACVs "OK" with a date and leave in place one of the used units, that causes the car to idle properly, i.e., about 700 revolutions/minute (RPM).

        If you can't find known good IACVs in a salvage yard in your locale, so report.

          Turned out to be MAF.

            Same motor, same issue 900 1992

            Just bought a 90 740GLE ..same motor, same issue. The wholesaler had replaced the MAF prior to purchase, supposedly.

            Did you just swap the unit out ...or was it tested? How did you get to the conclusion it was the MAF?
