how to recondition paint on roof of 92 245 200

hi sages- have never painted a major part of a car other than touch up. have a 92 245 in good condition. parked in my driveway and in the fla sun which eats paint. almost as destructive as salt in nj. the body paint is in good condition and original. used the top rated nu finish car polish/wax a few years ago. color is a dark navy blue. the roof paint is a different story. it is very dull and the clear coat which i surmise it used, appears to be turning white and flaking off as white powder. reminds me of cody jarret in white heat. want to rehabilitate it without being soaked by a car painter for $1000 or more. here is what i propose which i would like you to critique if you have actual exprience with this. 1st wash car then use rubbing compound to remove remainder of white deterioration(paint under seems in good but dull condition). when roof is clean, wax it with the nu finish to restore the shine and barrier coating. as alternative plan b, skip the waxing and paint the roof with that durable flat black(somewhat grainy ) paint which i have seen used on pickup beds and car roofs and hoods. if this is a good idea i will have to research the name of this paint . word is that it is extremely durable and resists sunburning. the different color will hardly be noticeable since the blue is so dark. since i plan to keep the car until it becomes unrepairable and dont care what mrs. jones or the ultra fastidious think. your kind and respected advice i seek. thanks tons oldduke

    Clear coat can be interesting.

    I bought a 6-year old '96 855R in Fire Red.

For the first 10 years or so, I waxed it twice a year, and it looked great.

One year, I did not do my springtime wax, and about 1/2 of the panels faded.

The roof and most of the right side faded and I could easily see that the other panels had clear coat on them.

After I polished the car - the faded panels put red on the rags, the clear coated panels did not!

The car came out looking great, and a few people that I asked could not pick out the clear coat panels!

Most info on Volvo paint that I have read relate that solid colors have no clear coat, and metallic colors do.

However, if your car was repaired, or repainted, it could indeed have clear coat.

I have a '90 745 in a burgundy metallic that obviously has a roof and hood that have clear coat that has faded away, and is white around the edges.

I am sure that any method that you use will take more color off than clearcoat because the clear is tougher than the color.

In my case, I plan to have the roof and hood painted, perhaps in a some shade of brown to create a two tone look.

Medium blus might look good on your car, and last longer in your sun. If you do the sanding and there is simple masking, a small shop may paint it for a reasonable price. Make sure you sand with a long, firm block, so that you take the high spots off first.

There are a number of people on the internet who have repainted cars with Rustoleum using a roller. Check out http://rolledon.forummotion.com/ for some details. I'm going to try that this year on one of my cars and will report the results.

The 91 240 in my fleet has deteriorated paint on the roof, hood and trunk as you describe so it seems that we are reaching the end of life for the original paint on these vehicles unless they were garaged for a significant portion of their lives.

I would go with your restore and polish in the first instance. AFAIK original Volvo paint on the 240 has no clear coat. However, heavily pigmented paint like blue and especially red are very prone to oxidisation. The "white" stuff could well just be oxidisation. This effect could well be happening on the hood as well, horizontal surfaces always the worse, but the hood usually gets a bit more love. Wagon roofs are hard work. After the first wash, consider going over it with a clay bar, or rather easier, one of the new clay mitts. This will give you a much smoother surface to work on. Try Meguiars Ultimate Compound to remove the oxidisation. A sponge applicator makes the job easier. Wax choice is down to you but apply several light coats over a couple of days. There are also sealers that can go over the wax if you wish.

If you have dollars to spare a mobile detailer will buff out the car, a good one will advise first if that will give you the result you want. A quick test with a bit of compound can also be done by yourself. Good Luck.

Once you remove the white(clearcoat), the new finish won't get the paint to shine.

    Old Duke,

The name of the paint I think you're referring to is Hammerite. When it first came out in the 80's, you were supposed to be able to use it to paint over rust, as in rusty wheel rims. I've never used it. Try Jamestown Distributors if you're still interested. They carry a line of it for boats.

Here is what I would do.Mask off everywhere you don't want it ruined.sand the roof with 320 dry or 600 wet. Will give you the same results. Sand it down to factory primer, no more. Then take it to Macco and pay $250 more or less to have the roof sprayed. Done. It will look better. You will spend about the same amount of money buying black paint this and that and still get crappy results. My 2 cents.
