Oil Pressure Light - slow to switch off 200 1989

Lately, I noticed that the Oil Pressure Light takes a while longer (>5 sec)
to turn off after starting the engine. Should I worry about the oil pump or could it just be an old sensor taking its time?

could also be an anti-drain seal in the filter ... 200 1989

The proper(!) oil filter has an anti-drain valve to keep the filter filled with oil -- i.e., so it doesn't empty during periods when the engine is off.

If the filter is empty, that ~5 sec interval is about the time it takes for it to fill when you start the engine (just like when you put in a new filter at oil change times if you don't do what I do and prefill the filter partially -- just enough so it doesn't spill oil when you spin the filter onto the engine).

So if you didn't have this problem earlier, then maybe the filter needs to be replaced. It's an easy thing to test -- just change the filter!

So, I changed the oil filter...
When I start the engine the oil light stays on for 30 secs at normal idle speed. Once I rev it up, the light disappears in a couple of secs.
I'm still suspicious of the oil pump.

Sorry the filter change didn't work.

Following the protocol of doing the easier/less costly things first, before changing the oil pump (a horror to do unless you pull the whole engine), the next thing to try is the pressure sender. You can put in a gauge in its place, but easier (unless you have a gauge handy) is to just get a replacement sender (and keep your fingers crossed :-).

        Good luck.

To be sure, you need to do as trichard said; connect a gauge. But understand you are possibly fighting a very common problem with the oil delivery pipe (not a pump or bearings) where the O-ring pops out.

      Thank you Ken.
I'll certainly go ahead and change the filter.
