Rear Axle Leak behind Calipers 140-160

Folks,

I am going through a stage 0 on a new to me '70 145s and I have noticed that the differential is leaking right at the rear wheel hub, behind the caliper, something I have never seen before. I see IPD has a seal for sale that looks to be the one leaking:

However, I wanted to see if anyone has done this replacement before and has any tips on the best procedure for replacing it.

Thanks!
Brian

Brian, You need to be careful about ordering parts for your diff. I think a 1970 would have the early style bearings and seals (unless the rear had been changed somewhere along the way) as I did with my '69--installing a '73 rear. The early style will have the handbrake cable entering the backing plate at the top. As far as I know you need to order parts as individual pieces for the early type rather than as a kit (more economical) for the later type (same as all 240/260 models). The early type is a little trickier than the late--you use the open cage "nut" bearing retainer to set the axle end play and then lock it in place. If you can "feel" end play - but not "see" it -- that's about right. If in doubt use a dial indicator. -- Dave

If your VIN is 30900 or higher, it should have the later style of bearings and seal(s).

For either style, the axles have to be removed.

The early style always has 2 seals, 1 in the axle tube and 1 in front of the outer axle bearing.

Although the bearing kits for the later style come with 2 seals, I have never found 1 that used both seals. At the minimum, the seal in front of the axle bearing will have to be replaced.
