Sensitive steering after rack replaced 200 1989

I recently had my steering rack replaced after my mechanic saw my old one was leaking. I ordered a Cam type from E-Europarts.com which was remanufactured by Maval Mfg Inc out of Twinsburg OH model# 9016M. Upon the test drive my mechanic almost put her in the ditch because the steering was so touchy- sensitive- "on steroids" as one BB post put it. At install he had to reroute some of the lines because apparently it wasn't the right type. It tracks perfectly down the road as he aligned it prior to test drive. He says he centered the rack using a ruler measuring from both ends. I also had the steering knuckle replaced because it was catching a bit. I have been driving it and am getting used to the new feel, but I really have to pay attention that I don't overreact (my wife will not drive it). Do you think this is a problem with the rack or did he do something wrong on install? Some have said it's just because I was used to an old rack and had to apply more pressure, but my 1994 940 feels like the old 240 steering. I read about a pressure control valve in the pump, but wouldn't that be coincidence? How do I check to see if this is the problem? Thanks for any help you can give.

replace the 'bad' replacement 200 1989

My experience with this: ours is 1989 245 DL wagon. Had it for MANY years. About 10 years ago replaced the rack, first one a dud, 2nd one OK. If I recall there are NO new ones, all used and/or rebuilt. About year ago replaced it again, this time with a different shop that I trust implicitly.

They had to order one, installed it, but the brick steered “weird” so they ordered a 2nd one, still no good. 3rd time they went with a different manufacturer, installed it, works great.

This shop has been very trustworthy as far as I’m concerned, they will not sell me anything that does not work as it should OR even if it works, they have a great warranty: 6 months standard BUT I could take something in they did and after a year or more they would definitely see about honoring the warranty regardless.

SO, all being said, my advice, if it means anything, don’t try to “fix” a “new/old/rebuilt” (rack) one just have the bad one sent back and have them send out another, BUT if this happens again ask your shop to seek a different manufacturer. Easier all around. Good luck!

Thanks consensus seems to be a bad part.

Sensitive steering after rack replaced 200 1989

Something is amiss -- shouldn't be anywhere near that sensitive. I replaced mine last year --- sensitivity, boost and feel pretty much as they were before the rack failed.

Thanks I was afraid of that. We'll see if he will do the work w/o charging double since I ordered the part. Any idea what could cause this to happen to a steering rack.
