new wheels / tires 92 245 200

Hi:
I have a 92 245 with 185/70 14, not totally worn. Thinking about bigger, as 15" alloys off 740's (which often get scrapped) and 205/60 x15 coopers, which are very cheap at Discount Tire Direct right now. Still have to locate the wheels, and won't buy unless cheap, but does this look like a good plan overall? Opinions please. Thanks!

new wheels / tires 92 245 200

Hi:
did the search on brickboard, reference to an Evans site that comes up "this url for sale" or similar. so ANY 700 or 900 RWD wheel has about the same specs and will fit? My prior experience with used alloys was taking 2 years to get new snows and like new alloys for Dodge pickup. It all worked out fine. Grand total $365 for everything including a spare steel rim AND a medium quality non-snow used radial to use as spare. Mounted at used tire store who were friendlier and cheaper than new tire place. Craigs list - I'm watching you! I'm in Indiana, BTW, if anyone hears of any deals. Thanks.

These guys are local to me, cash only and kind of pain to work with but car-part.com shows them having 4 of the 20 spoke wheels but call for price. They tend to be pretty cheap but their online inventory tends to be suspect.

I used to pay $150 a piece for those 20 spoke 15 inch wheels(92 740T) when the wife would hit a curb/pothole.If you could find them. Those wheels are tough to kill too. They were only made for 2-3 yrs. I now have them on my 87 240 with 195/15 Cooper touring tires. Bilsteins IPD bars. The ride is great!! 14 inch steelies in the winter though. I have a set of 16 inch Hydras with caps for sale from a 940. $500 firm for all four. Awesome ride as well but my daughter 88 240 wants the stock tires now as its more nimble to drive.

I think I can find you at least three used steelies off a 7-series here in Hammond at the PnP. Want me to check?

Do you mean the 700-900, and maybe early 90 series 15" steelies?

Or would you go with alloy wheels?

195/60 on 15" is the correct size for 240, I think. 205 is slightly over sized (larger diameter). Yet I think it'd work.

I dunno about the center caps or wheel cover for the 700-900 steelies.

I kind of want to do the same. 15" 700-900 steelies, yet re-use the 240 14" steelie wheel center cap (the later two piece stainless center cap or hub cap).

cheers,

dud.

700 series seem not popular, and often have alloys, so if scrapped the wheels might be cheap, and 740's are heavier so worth more as scrap. Alloys should not be that expensive, and I BELIEVE are similar in size, offset, etc. to 240 wheels. Just looked at Discount Tire Direct with Conti Control contact Touring A/S at $164 after rebate 205/65/15. Again, are dimensions for 7 series same as 240 except for 15 instead of 14?

As well as 240 alloys, all 700/900 wheels up until the last of the 960 models which used front wheel drive specs will fit. LOTS of different styles and you can sometimes pick up a complete set with good tyres for very little money. That could be another option for you. The slightly more sought after Virgo/240 GLT wheels also a nice option. They are 15 x 6 and go nicely with 195/60 or 195/65 tyres. 205/60 does start to raise the gearing a bit which can make the car feel a bit sluggish. Great for cruising though.

Please keep in mind the age of these alloy wheels. - as old as the car.

You'll want to check them for true, fractures, corrosion, finish, and bead condition (where the tire bead seals to the wheel bead or rim.)

Sometimes rehabbing these alloy wheel can be prohibitively expensive.

I have those 14" Coronas on my 1992 240 GL. 6$ a piece. To rehab them as they are corroded, one is warped, is like 100 each at least. Yet I drive on them now since I can't rush out and by new Michelin tires on re-habbed 14" Volvo 240 steelies.

As for wheel sizes on 700. For the 15" Virgo on 240, you used a 60 series profile and 195 tread width, I believe.

You should check your 1992 Volvo 700 series owner manual for some manner of wheel size information. I'm not sure.

A web search may bring up enthusiast sites listing Volvo 200-700-900-90 wheel information comprehensively. You may want to search the brickboard or use your fave web search tool to target the brickboard as there exist innumerable threads on RWD Volvo alloy wheels, and their use on other Volvo models.

IN FACT, hosted right here on everyone's favorite brickboard, in your 700-900-90 FAQ, is:

To find wheel, yes, poll the salvage yards, look at brickboard, turbobricks, iPd, and other Volvo-specific classified for parts.

I can post links a little later if you want. Back to work for me now.

Questions?

Hope that helps.
