Problem Solved For Now - Thanks Art!

 photo P1030069_zps3fech3p6.jpg

Many, many, thanks to Art Benstein who I met in person for the first time yesterday. It was an amazing sight pulling up to his garage and I see 5 or 6 Volvo 240's on site. Then I noticed his 240 wagon had the hood up and laying across the radiator support, were 6 air mass meters waiting for me.

We spent about 4 hours looking the car over. Mostly looking for vacuum leaks and checking out the vacuum gauge. The B cam on my 245 idles lumpy. Checked the function of the oxygen sensor, checked compression on the cylinders 175-180 psi each, and looked at my wobbly power steering pump.

I had a great time with Art and I learned so much in those 4 hours. Art and his wife Mary Jane are wonderful people. With all the trouble in Baltimore recently, and lame people on the internet, it was fantastic to meet some genuinely nice and helpful folks.

Thank you Art, the car is running well. No bogging. No hesitation. No diagnostic codes.

Good to hear you and MJ are doing well, Art!

Also happy to hear Tom's 245 is running well - maybe now he'll keep it :)

Problem Solved For Now - Thanks Art!

One thing I noticed the other day tuning up my 91 245 was both the air hoses going to the IAC valve were split at the connection with the valve. Not sure it was leaking air but I replaced them with some spares I had salvaged from a wrecked 91 last year.

Problem Solved For Now - Thanks Art!

Forgot to mention that the Air Mass Meter seemed to be the main problem.
Art also discovered that my fuel check valve was bad and the junkyard oxygen sensor wasn't responding as well as it could. So we swapped the original one back in and it performed better.

Thank you to all who offered suggestions and help over the last several weeks.

      Firehouse Subs 200 1992

Tom treated us to lunch during our ~10 mile test drive. The vacuum gauge readings had me thinking there was a manifold gasket leak or some other valve problem (hence the compression check) until Tom reminded me the cam was not the same as the one I'm used to taking readings on. I thank Bruce Young (lucid) for the gift of the AMM and feel certain he'd be delighted to hear it is back in service.

Be nice to your kids. They will choose your nursing home one day.

        Hi Art,

        You're handsome!

I believe what we can learn from this saga is that not all junkyard parts are good especially precision parts like AMM and O2 sensor. Alas I've seen across the board some do resort to these. Buyers beware should go into the FAQ.

"Be nice to your kids. They will choose your nursing home one day."

Anyway about the above I think if you treat them nicer maybe they will take care of you in their homes someday just like we Asians do.

        Regards,
        Amarin.

O2 sensors I agree but you can get universal Bosch on eBay that you splice your harness to for $12 or $45 from AutoZone.

AMM however at the junk yard are just fine if you have a 30 day warranty to check them out. You can't expect to just pick any AMM at the drop of a hat and get a good one as they are rare these days. If you plan ahead and buy only like new ones, test them out in your car you will know you have a good one when needed.

        AMM? What AMM? 200 1992

All I got is an age-related "Huh?" on that one. But you're surely welcome.

Now where is the "Corner Gas" cap?

Bruce, it was years ago now, I realize, but you sent me a care package when, I think, you replaced Sarah's 245 and had no more 240s. Our cars have been pretty good about not needing much done to them lately, given I don't do much about rust.

            your photo 200 1992

            Hi Art,

It's very nice photo of you. You look very similar to what I have imagined. Dave/Volvo from Heck also had a long white hair like yours. He recently cut it short.

I also look forward to meet you near future. Until then, take care & enjoy your weekend.
