What oil and weight would you recommend?... 900

Hello Everybody,

I have a '93 945T with over 221,000 miles on her. I've switched over to Mobil 1 10W-30 synthetic for the last couple of changes here in the Northwest. I'm now looking at the Mobil 1 synthetic for high milage autos and also read somewhere that somebody uses 5W-30.
What oil and weight would you recommend for a high milage car?

TIA

GothM

I normally run Rotella 5-40 full synthetic year round. I am in the Midwest and so far no problems during winter. You can probably used a higher weight if you do an oil change just for summer. I seen some 10-40 or 10-50 in some BMW.

I also use the FRAM ULTRA SYNTHETIC™ Oil Filter.

Hope that helps.

Hello, thank you for the information. I haven't found a 15W 40 synthetic oil. The Volvo manual says you can use 15W 40 oil and I'm assuming it's the conventional type. Why do you think they don't recommend or list 10W 40 as an alternative? I have 15W 40 Shell conventional oil for my diesel engine truck and wondering if can be used for gas engines too?

I used Mobil 1 10W 30 high milage synthetic oil and used the same for my wife's Toyota Rav4. This makes it a little easier and less to keep track of. :)

TIA

GothM

Your wife's Toyota engine is built with very tight specifications, er, tolerances. So you'd use 10W30 year round, usually. Synthetic.

There are additives in diesel engine oil you do not want in your gasoline engine. Zinc or ZDDP? Bad for Cat Converter.

I have been actually using Mobile 1 15W50 in my 191 240. But I'd been on sustained high speed highway drives with only gas fillups in that and my 1992 in Summers in this region.

There is a link that discusses the nature of lubricants in a thread here in the last few years. Very informative. Bobs the Oil Guy or something?

As engines do wear, and tolerances are not so tight, over time. a synthetic engine oil as a 10W40 may be fine year round for you in Seattle.

Maybe we can go for an ale at the Black Raven Brewing Company in North Redmond. Raven T Craven! Riotous!

Or Kuslshan and Aslan, and all the other lovley craft brewers in Bellingham and BC!!!!!

mighty, Mighty, MIGHTY Washington State!

There you go.

Hope that helps.

Happy Friday!

Thank you for the reply, much appreciated! I will definitely check out Bob the oil guy info but it does sound like 10W40 synthetic would be good for her.

The beer here is pretty good! :)

All the Best....
