Do Dana 30s ever wear out? 200

Has anyone had to replace their rear end? How difficult is it?

i have done half dozen 240 rear axles assemblies.

you will need to jack the rear end as high as is possible with out a lift

it is a straight forward job.

the shortcuts i have found are these:

leave brake calipers/lines attached and hang out of the way. you'll need to be creative since the springs are going. make sure the lines are not attached any where to the axle.

remove only the front trailer arm bolt. let the rear one alone and take it out with the axle then its comfortable to remove it.

i like to take the shock off at the upper nut not the lower bolt

once you're ready to go, use a floor jack under the pumpkin for support, replace the rear tire onto the axle and lower the unbolted assembly lower so the tires support the weight.

now you can roll it around fairly easily and with some stability

I have 1 client with 4 245s-81 with 980k, 84 with 325k, 86 with 226k and a 93 he just bought with 119k and a bad odometer. not a rear end ever changed. never had to change 1 ever in any Volvo so I can't speak to how easy. good luck, chuck.

No, you're not likely to have to change a rear--unless it was run dry. Changing one is straight forward enough. Problems can arise if any of the trailing arm pivot bolts are frozen so an hour spent beforehand making sure each bolt will turn and giving you time to apply penetrating oil where needed.
If the new rear has a working handbrake it will be more easily dealt with leaving the cables attached to the rear--loosen them at the handbrake handle and pull them out of the body.
If the new rear has working brakes leave them attached -- you'll be disconnecting at the two flex hoses. I'd disconnect at the body on the donor car--gives you more to work with later.
Re-attach the vent hose (often found disconnected) when done.
Make sure you know what you're getting - different models have different ratios. -- Dave
