volvo 240 '91 - right rear tail lights not on 200

Hi,

When I turn my key on to light up the dashboard and do not start the engine, I have two lights on the left rear. However, my two right rear lights are not on. Brake light on the rear right does not work.

So I checked bulbs on the right rear lights. They seemed to be OK.

All my rear turn signals work fine.

I would appreciate any comments.

Thank you.

Start with checking the ground for the right side, then make sure the connector mounted on the light fully. Get out your volt meter and check for 12 volts.

Thanks, Dan. I will try that.

I found that the problem was loose connector to the board in the rear lens assembly. Each time I wiggle it, the connection is on and off. I am considering changing the whole rear lens assembly.

          Hi Sparro,

Do you mean the wire harness connector that secures to the tail light assembly. Two barbed clips, part of the black tail light plastic, that are on either side of the white wire harness connector to secure the connector into place, correct?

We're talking sedan tail light on your 1991 Volvo 240, yes? Not a wagon?

          I dunno if this helps:
          http://cleanflametrap.com/tony/tail_light_color_code_v0.htm

The white wire harness connector can open up wider over time. I dunno if the plastic body opens up as it hangs on the tail light. I used pliers to crimp the white connectors closed somewhat so they clamp onto the tail light assembly wire flexi-circuit board connector that folds over the horizontal flat protrusion molded as part of the black plastic tail light reflector body (i dunno what to call it).

Before crimping it, I also use an old toothbrush to clean the contacts inside the white wire harness connector.

Yes, as silvermine dielectric grease helps slow corrosion. At the connector and where the bulb holder contact touch the flexi circuit board. Just don't get the grease on the bulb or inside the reflector area, if you can.

Certainly where the bulb holder contact the bare copper contacts on the flex circuit board. It could help to inspect the flexi circuit boards for corrosion.

And remember, as I believe we're discussing 1991 Volvo 240 sedan (not wagon) tail lights, you have two distinct bulb holders that fit into the tail light assemblies for the brake lights. The bulb holders hold bulb number 1157. 1127 is a dual-filament bulb. One for parking, or position lights. One for the brake light. The dual-filament bulb holder are distinct in that the white dual filament brake light bulb holder installs in to the right (as you sit in the 240) tail light, and the black one to the left.

Check your Volvo 240 owner manual. It's in there.

I've seen people reverse the dual-filament brake light bulb holders. The red lenses melted or cracked from the heat or the brake light bulb on all the time when the lights are on. (Maybe the right, as you sit in the car, side melts?)

On wagon 240s, they are the same left to right for dual filament brake light bulb holders in the tail light assemblies.

          Questions?

          Hope that helps.

It seems like I am always chasing poor connections on the sedans tail lights it is common problem.

i found that liberal use of dielectric grease on the connector solved this problem.
