91 240DL 200 1991

My '91 240DL is dying occasionally. When it is cold out and I don't let the car warm up it dies when I put it in gear and let off the brake. This morning I had some trouble getting it restarted after it died. It doesn't seem to happen after the car is warm. My other car did this off and on for a few weeks before it died and I still haven't figured out what went wrong with that one. I should mention, not to throw in a red herring, that this car has a leaky transmission.

The other car you mentioned must be the '84.

Does seem strange that you now have two cars knocked out the same way. Too...coincidental?

A common link would be the driver(s) taking both cars to the same gasoline station and buying real low octane (E85) gasoline or diesel(?) water condensation entrained fuel from inside those stations tanks!

Small town that Autaugaville, AL!

Phil

In that order. The black box for the OBD.

As for your auto tranny, well, that's in the brickboard 700-900 FAQ also.

As well as your big blue bentley Volvo 240 service manual bible.

cheers,

Start with the easy stuff:

Clean the throttle body
Reset the position of the throttle position switch
Clean the IAC
Check for Vac leaks
Pull the codes...not all set a check engine light
Make sure the coil wire is fully seated on both ends (it is a tiny bit too short in a lot of sets and if you have a collapsed motor mount it can easily come unseated)
Once full warmed up (drive of at least 20 minutes) check the transmission fluid

If none of those help, report back.
