Clutch recommendations 200

What brand of clutch kit would you recommend for an '84 245?

I put a Volvo "blue box" clutch in there last time and it is slipping already after 80,000 miles. The factory clutch made it to 220,000 and change. Roughly the same driving habits now, albeit fewer miles per year.

Wonder if the difference is that the old mid-80s manufactured part used an asbestos lining where the replacement parts are not?

I've installed a lot of LuK clutches and liked their performance. Smooth every time.
Sachs is the OE manufacturer as I recall. I never went to Volvo for them.
Fenco is junk unless they're supplying a re-boxed Sachs, which I saw once or twice. Their reman stuff and even some new, is worth staying away from.

hi sages- this is an interesting question. have installed many clutches since the 60s. most of them went in dodges and fords. most were remanufactured from the auto parts store(pep boys, napa, etc.) . all were borg and beck style from CU called a matched set(pressure plate and disc). the borg style was a 3 finger centrifugally assisted type- not a diaphragm type like volvo and chevrolet. do know the diaphragm style has less gripping strength and is easier to push which may account for why they slip sooner. have not changed a volvo clutch yet. only problem i ever had was in a valiant and a polara where the clutches slipped after about 10k miles but ithink it was my fault b/c i skimped and didnt get the flywheel resurfaced. on rare occassions it doesnt pay to be a cheap bastid. any cheap bastids on the board? although i plan to do the eventual volvo 245 clutch myself, im curious what the volvo dealer might try to soak me for. bet he would have to make a home run and try to clip me for $1500. let me know. thanks tons oldduke

Flywheel resurfacing is oversold. Sometimes they need it, mostly they don't.
Diaphragm pressure plates are smoother, clamp just as well, and chatter less. Also shorter.
Volvo did use Borg and Beck in the early sixties. So did Ferrari.
I used to charge five hours for a clutch in a 240, and four hours in 120 without overdrive. So the dealer should have the flat rate which has to be under six hours. What, $100 an hour now, maybe 120? Six hundred labour. Might pad it with a rear main seal, about 15 minutes tops. Clutch kit, trans oil change, so under $1000. Maybe some u-joints. They'll all look for things that can make a new clutch seem chattery, and you can't blame them. Steady bearings, whatever. Engine mounts. It can add up.
Can't tell til you get in there. The old song.

Did you check the clutch cable adjustment, first.

As the clutch wears, as you know, you'll need to adjust it to the freeplay at the cable end connection on the transmission.

In other words, so the pedal travel is less and the clutch engages closer to the floor board.

          Hope that help.
