Fixed intermittent Odometer, now this... 200 1989

Sages,

1989, 245 DL, manual, 328k miles on it.

Took my cluster out last night and soldered a few connections that appeared to be cold solder joints. Put it back in and all seemed fine.

Drove it this morning and the odometer works fine, but here is what does not work:
1. High beam light no longer illuminates, but the high beams do work,
2. Cruise control will not work, though the brake lights work as they are tied to the same fuse, and finally,
3. The shift up arrow indicator no longer works as well, but the bulb is fine as it illuminates when I turn the key.

At first I thought maybe I had the cruise control and up shift wire backwards, but I took a look this morning and they are fine.

Any and all help here are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

To me you got lots of different circuits being affected and all have to have a ground.

You might want to check back onto the main harness a look in the dark for those black wires from it! I know their tough!

It might be one of those "Y" circuits or one of those WHY did that break wires😱

I am talking about the one that disappear behind the relays from tachometers and clocks or radios and bend down behind the lower console.
They are fastened under a sheet screw on the upper left corner.
One might have weaken or broken from a repair elsewhere?
The Instruments lights and those console lights are for sure grounded on there, so may the harness was too!

Just thought if I spent a moment thinking of it, you might too!
😐 good luck! I hope you find it quick, whatever it is!
    Phil

Fixed intermittent Odometer, now this... 200 1989

So about 4 PM today I finally got a chance to dig into this.

I started by just disconnecting the cruise wire, tach wire and also the up shift wire, but this did not fix or alleviate the high beam issue so I took it out.

I disassembled the entire unit and found that the high beam trace was none existent even though I was ohming it.

I had another circuit board laying around so I took a look at it and touched up a few connections and called it done.

Put it all back together and it worked. Everything now works.

I will keep an eye on the odometer just to make sure it keeps on working correctly.

Thanks for everyone and their advice.

      Matt

How extensive was your work?... 200 1989

It all depends on what you did:

re the title, "Fixed intermittent Odometer....", did you confine your resoldering to only the three solder connections of the motor that drives the odometer? [I've had to do this myself for a likewise intermittent odometer]
If so, I'd suspect that the first and most obvious possibility is that you simply failed to reconnect the wiring correctly when you reinstalled the cluster -- you didn't mess with anything else. There's little leeway for a mistake (the two main (semicircular and circular) plugs have orientation that's fixed, but you never know what can happen.

On the other hand, if you got carried away and started resoldering other connections all over the board, then there's no telling what happened. Maybe you overflowed a solder and caused a short, or maybe actually loosened a connection when the solder flowed?

      Ken C,

So this is what I touched.
Odometer: three spots that you talk about, then I touched up the two connections for the thick brown wires, and the connections for the two thin wires, and finally I touched up the three consecutive pin holders, for lack of a better name. These plug into the cluster board. Finally I added more solder to the flat three finger area where the wire plugs into the back of the odometer as they looked worn and the connector was loose, which is not now.

So I touched a lot on the odometer assembly. Need to take a brush to it to clean up the flux better so I can see what is really going on.

      Cluster board:
Here I only touched one pin that I could see had a cold solder joint. It is one of the three fingers that plug into the odometer assembly.

The plan for this weekend is to first disconnect the shift up wire and cruise control wire and see if 1) the high beam light works again, and 2) if the odometer starts working again. Yes that's right it stopped again last night.

Depending on the results there I plan to remove the odometer assembly and see what just the cluster board does. Will the cruise control work, will the high beam light work, will the up shift arrow work?

Again, depending on the results will determine how far into the mother board I have to go. Hopefully not to far. The good news is that I have spare parts laying around that I can put in to see if stuff works and the like. The bad part is the time. Have other things lined up and was not planning on doing this, but it must get fixed.

      Ugh!

      Just shoot me!

      Matt

Sounds like you are going to have to go back in and check your work as all was working fine before you took it apart? Not sure how susceptiple these boards are to ESD damage? Grounded work area?

      Heavy sigh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not what I wanted to hear, but I guess you are right. Ugh!

I am just throwing it out there as these are old electronics now. I come from electronics background and ESD was something that was preached to me over over, in turn I passed it along later on.The boards and componenents used now adays are all garbage and cant be to carefull. I assume you checked the bulbs? Not sure what to say about cruise control? Go back in and check your work maybe reseating some connections will bring it back to life!!

I'm gonna start with pulling the odometer first and see if that makes a difference. I don't want to tear the whole mother board apart, but I will if I have too. Not digging this at all.
