heater/coolant hardline 900

I am replacing the blown engine (original to the car) in my 91 940T. The replacement engine is a 1994 B230FT. It is sitting on a stand waiting to be installed. I was sitting, gazing in wonderment at this marvel of engineering, when I noticed that, Hey!, the hard pipe from the water pump back under the turbo and around the corner to the upper heater hose has an extra outlet! I checked my manual(s), and can't find any reference to this extra piece of pipe. It is located just behind the oil filter extension and is about 3 inches long, designed to accept a small hose ( one inch?), and comes off the hardpipe at 90 degrees. Can someone tell me what this was for? Obviously I will not need it, and I am thankful I did not throw away any parts off the old engine, but I am curious as to what this was for.
Thanks!
JD

The early turbos, like the '91, used an external oil cooler mounted under the radiator, so the oil pipes ran from the oil filter housing to that cooler. Later, like the '94, dropped that cooler and used coolant routed down from the pipe you mention to the housing to cool the oil. I have wondered which system is better as far as cooling; the later one is definitely cheaper and easier to deal with. I am not sure when exactly the change took place, 1992 or 1993...

I believe that is where one of the hoses for the water cooled engine oil cooler used on the later B230FT is connected.
