much ado about nut thing 120-130

I put new bluz oem Volvo air cleaners on with some difficulty and then discovered that I could not retract the choke as the nut holding the air cleaner bolt closest to the firewall was interfering with the choke cable clamp's movement.

So I got some "jamb" nuts, just like an ordinary nut but thinner and thought that would give the clearance required.

But as I was fumbling with the nuts trying to re-install them I wondered why I couldn't get some 3/8" helicoils and thread the carbs so I'd no longer have to cope with those dam nuts. Seemed simple enough an idea, so before I spend too much time figuring out why this is not a good idea I thought you all might have some insight into this.

    Can't imagine any downsides.
    The HS-6s on my '68 were threaded from the factory.

    I agree, those nuts can be a nuisance. As the designer & manufacturer of the air-filter conversion kits, (as seen on Ebay from time to time) I have dropped more than my share of them. And they always seem to roll way out of reach underneath the car. I think Volvo finally started threading the holes so the nuts are not necessary. Another advantage to my conversion kits is you only have to remove the top cover (one nut) to change the filter element. The rest of it stays bolted in place. Sounds like you have a good idea with the inserts.
    If anyone has questions, or wants info / photos of my kits please send me an email: blangdon@gvtc.com

    ha;

    Helicoils would work great...so do Nutserts (a internal/externally threaded insert if you will) ...and the later is IMO a bit simpler to install. I've installed Nutserts on a few early carbs and recommend it...no more fumbling around with nuts...ever again!...I recommend it...no downsides really...

    Cheers
