Tracking down intermittent groan/squeal 200 1993

Hi all,

Recently started encountering a weird metallic squeal+groan in my 93 245. It seems to be coming from the front driver's side, sounds a lot like normal brake squeal, and happens very intermittently at all speeds - I've noticed it when turning in either direction at low speeds after braking, and at highway speeds it shows up most reliably when the wheel returns to straight after even a slight right bend in the road (no brakes involved). Always with right turns in that case.

I took the front wheels off and checked out the brakes this weekend. Pads were fine, but noticed that the inside bottom piston on the driver's side caliper was stuck. I was able to get it to move a tiny bit after a lot of prying, etc - but I'm guessing the caliper will need to be replaced, planning to order that soon. Problem is, I didn't notice excessive wear on either the pad or the rotor, so I'm not sure if this is the source of my issue.

I don't have any experience with wheel bearings, but from reading on this forum it seems like they are less intermittent and lower in pitch... Any ideas on what this could be? I've recently replaced all rear suspension components as well as new driveshaft carrier bearing & U-joints. The noise didn't start until a few months after this work was done.

Thanks!

When you had the front wheels off the ground did you try to shake the tires? Pull and push in and out from the top and bottom only!

Spin the tire and listen for noise and smoothness. If your pads are dragging that sort of negates how you can read for noise but compare sides!

A loose wheel bearing can allow the disks to shift inside the caliper or vibrate to make a squeal or some chirps.

Thanks for the response. I did check for play and didn't find much, but I'll check again this week. Would that be more likely to be inner or outer bearing, do you think?

Normally right turn noise indicates left wheel bearing. Just a guess, outer.

Your brakes may be just a caliber guide pin stuck. A lot cheapen to remove and clean it up then replacing the entire caliber.

            Thanks for the replies -

Are those the retainer pins that hold the pad in place? I had those out to try to get the piston to compress, no go.

If a piston is frozen it's time for a new caliper.

Yes indeed, I have a pair coming into the local shop this week. I'll replace both of the front calipers this weekend, which will be a great opportunity to check out the condition of the bearings and regrease/replace if necessary. I'll report back with findings. Thanks again!

I just replaced both front calipers on my daughters 92 245, I got them at O'Reilly's they were able to get them to me overnight most auto places for some reason don't list them.

You have to inspect them carefully when you get them as one I got was an early 80's non ABS caliper for the solid rotor with 3 bleeder valves sold to me as a 92 ABS caliper. There was only one of the brake line and one Port was capped off so there was only one available. I have no idea if this would have worked as it should but it was replaced quickly.
