Gotta beat it with a stick to get it started...... 200 1993

So; occasionally, and somewhat more frequently, but not regularly, after the car has been driven and is still warm (usually), maybe about 20-90 min after it has been last started, but never over night, once after work - I get the mystery no start with a good battery, and good FPR. Now some history here - over several years I have cleaned/serviced the neutral safety switch, replaced a battery with a dead cell, replaced alternator bushings (caused slack belts and reduced battery charging), all which I think created a no start problem that was solved (in the parking lot) by either scratching my head for several minutes or getting a jump. So lately, after fixing? those problems, I've started getting another random no start surprise. To get it started, based on research and observation, I've started wacking the starter with a stick (pool cue style, with a 1" x 2 ft dowel). This seems to work, sometimes 3 wacks does it, sometimes a few more, wait, then thwack, thwack, thwack; vroooom there she goes.... Last night it took about 3 sets and 2-3 min before it started.
So, do you think it could be the starter? Seriously, I've got most of my money on that too, but wondering if a bad ground wire is at play.
Question #2: How can I confirm (stranded out in some random parking lot with minimal tools and not in my grubby shop clothes) if it's the starter and/or bad ground?
And, Question #3, if it is the starter (in particular the bendix solenoid), can that be removed and serviced (by me or a local elect shop that rebuilds alternators), or should I just change out the starter?
Q 4 - The rebuilt ones on FCP are ok?
Thanks for your help in advance. This car reminds me of the people riding those little burros, giving the hind quarters a steady reminder with a stick to keep moving.....

Yep change the starter, you could try wiring up a relay for the starter.

Sticking solenoid on the starter it is time to get it rebuilt or replaced. if you have a local auto rebuilder that would be your best bet and best chance of getting a quality rebuild.

Update - ordered a rebuilt one from FCP and finally had a chance to install it last weekend. In the meantime over the last month I had to wack it with a stick about once a week, randomly you never know when it was going to happen.
So it was actually pretty easy. Sprayed some PB blaster on the starter bolt threads and got a $10 20" 3/8 extension from sears. Used an 18mm socket, a wobble, the new 20" extension, my std 8 inch x 3/8" extension and a 1/2 breaker bar with an adapter down to the 3/8. Needed a longer bar than my standard 3/8 BB to get enough torque to break the bolt loose, but it wasn't really that bad. Slid everything in behind the cross member that supports the rear of the tranny (I think) and that gave me a straight enough shot to get on the bolt head. The bottom bolt was obviously pretty simple and as they say "installation was the reverse of removal". Bonus points she started right up too. So I'm gonna look into getting the old one re-built and put on the shelf for the other brick. Just in case.

        Hi,

You might want to get your old starter rebuilt ASAP. The starter died in my wife's 92 245 and I didn't have a spare on hand. The quickest solution was $140 for a remanufactured one from Advance. The one from Advance sounded like a vacuum cleaner being turned on for a few seconds each time the car was started. But as long as the part is "working" it cannot be returned. Instead of taking my old one to Advance for the core charge I had it rebuilt locally. Long story short 8 months later I was removing the dead Advance starter motor and installing one I had rebuilt.

Ha, wish I'd done that, my wife's just started doing the same thing....They're not cheap to rebuild around here - $200 plus. I do the local rebuild with the alternators but decided to order a rebuilt bosch starter from FCP. In the meantime it's time to break out my trusty stick again....

Only got a few "stick starts" before it died, fortunately in the drive way thank God. Just replaced it last night, same procedure as before, except for some reason I needed another 4" extension to the above. Def needed the 1/2 breaker bar, the whole assembly torques about 30-40 degrees before the bolt breaks loose. Hopefully I'm done replacing starters for awhile...but I'm getting good at it!

Only got a couple "stick starts" before this one died, fortunately at the house, thank God. Got the new (rebuilt)installed last night and she started right up, same procedure as before, for some reason this time I also needed an additional 4" extension plus what's noted above. Couple drops of PB blaster. Def needed the 1/2 breaker bar to break the bolt loose, everything torques about 30-40 degrees before it pops loose. Hopefully I'm out of the starter replacement business now.....but might get the old one rebuilt this time just to make sure.....
